I have a SSC P7 LED, which is very bright and cost £50 new. The downside is it takes industrial rechargable batteries which are not standard.

I think the ones with joints have a tendency to rattle/loosen over time. I've got some high end hand torches, so decided to mount those rather than replace aging cycle lights (and to use them more!), and opted for the Two Fish lock blocks:

http://www.twofish.biz/bike.html

These are velcro based and the main disadvantage is that they are at a fixed angle - parallel to the bar or perpendicular to it, so might not suit swept back bars.

Apparently the shape of the beam from a torch may dazzle people coming the other way. See the comments on Karl McKracken's blog.

Deal Extreme are very slow but nice and cheap and about the best place to LED stuff. If you want a very bright cheap torch most of their 18650 torches will out shine most stuff on the road.
