"please CEC - fix Morningside and Comiston Roads, they are a disgrace and positive danger to cyclists"

Yep, quite a few people on here suffer those roads most days.

It's not just the road surface, it's also the fact that taking a line to avoid the worst bits makes certain drivers feel the have the right to come absurdly close behind you.

Unless you permanently hug the gutter there's not much chance they could pass anyway with the parked cars, bus boarders, buses, oncoming traffic etc.

Also urgent need to repaint the slewed centre white line between Maxwell Street and the clock.

meteorite craters - you were lucky...

For the last few weeks there has been a partially collapsed manhole cover in the middle of Morningside Drive - which had a traffic cone sitting on top of it. The manhole fully collapsed about 10 days ago, leaving a very deep hole you could actually cycle into in the road. The obvious solution - put some barriers around it, reducing the road to one lane. No sign of it being fixed yet.

I'm not going to complain about road re-surfacing, but since I am having a rant please CEC - fix Morningside and Comiston Roads, they are a disgrace and positive danger to cyclists.

And perhaps why they did half of the Melville Terrace car park street up to around Victor Hugos, but not the other half outside the Sick Kids where the road is falling apart.

I'm quite pleased they have done some minor roads and streets, simply because the one I live on was done at the start of the summer. :) It needed it too, the boundaries between various utility works had become ravines, the potholes were like meteorite craters. Now the street's as smooth as silk, which makes starting or ending a bike ride a real pleasure.

Hermitage Drive (and a few surrounding streets) has been in a strange stalled state for a while now. Notices went up several weeks ago for parking restrictions and some surface preperation was done, but as far as I know it's still sitting like that.

I never seemed like the most pressing resurfacing requirement. It should please the few incredibly wealthy people who are lucky enough to own a house there. And the rat runners - a less than perfect surface is no fun at 40mph.
Oh, and the dog walkers who drive to the wee Hermitage car park on the corner.

I was astonished to read your post.

I lived nearby as a child and this is about as minor a road as you will find in the area.

Not that away from there, they would do well to look at Frogston Road, which 'could' be a useful bike route.

In recent years CEC has had a ban on resurfacing works on main roads so as not to make things worse for 'people affected by city centre tram works'!

This ban has been lifted though not much major resurfacing is in evidence.

By contrast quite a few quiet side streets and even cul-de-sacs have had a makeover.

This seems to be the latest -

"

Its 7am and South Neighbourhood is kicking off the day with some carriageway resurfacing in Gilmerton Dykes Drive #edincouncil

Original Tweet: http://twitter.com/south_team/status/106607184246349825

"

A quick look on Google StreetView shows that it's far from perfect - there's evidence of previous major utility work which seems to have been reinstated quite well. (It's a long street and I don't know which bit is being done.)

I'm sure 'we' could think of streets more in need of work!

Incidentally this type of work is easier to find money for as it counts as "Capital". Repainting white lines or ASL boxes counts as "Revenue".

Though that doesn't really explain why capital budgets are always better supplied with cash than revenue ones.
