Though I don't like the way in which the BBC article presents the opinions of a self-selecting group (people who have written in to their website) as representative of the public at large. If they wanted to guage the public mood they should conduct a statistical survey or something.

"But if rail links in the borders were re-introduced it might lead to down sizing/ country living for a few?" When doing anti-natal yoga (horrible, horrible) a few years ago, I met someone who had just moved to Galashiels or somewhere like that because they were calculating on train arriving...Maybe they're the only ones. But it would be so fab to be able to get to the Borders by train/bike. We'd definitely do it. The 38s a great bus, it is just unbelievably infrequent and NEVER on schedule on weekends. I don't understand why Edinburgh's cross-town arterials are so weak, when the links in and out of city centre are so good....and, as I've argued elsewhere, this is surely what makes cycling cross-town so bad too (because of increased car journeys).

I know people who travel from Edinburgh to Bathgate to shop (2 people to be exact). I am the only person I know who has ever gone to Alloa but it was tricky to get to on public transport. Rail links don't seem to have incorporated Bathgate and Alloa into the housing market of Edinburgh? But if rail links in the borders were re-introduced it might lead to down sizing/ country living for a few? On other strings i have picked up that bikes on trains is now a reasonable success? Get it on Tom Morton again - 'heterogenous group of Edinburgh and Airdrieonian Cyclist's congratulate Rail Carriers on their enlightened attitude to bikes on trains'.

"if it does open it will be a fantastic success and they'll have to increase the numbers of trains"

You can't possibly believe that. Passenger forecasts are always right - just look at the ones for Bathgate and Alloa.

That's why they're not re-opening the South Sub - because it would only attract the numbers who use the 38 bus...

He said that even his 14-year-old son could not believe the bill had been passed to reopen the railway based on "unsubstantiated conjecture" in the business case.

Mind you if I was a 14 year old I'd think that getting back and forth to Edinburgh quickly and cheaply was a good thing. Problem is there is no station at Heriot where he lives.

He and his pals will have left school and be driving the A7 long before it's open.

But.. when / if it does open it will be a fantastic success and they'll have to increase the numbers of trains.

Exactly, MTB 'tourism' potential is significant.

I've seen reports (in England) of people being allowed to take bikes (en masse) into ordinary carriages/seating areas - off peak.

Just found this - http://www.bikesandtrains.co.uk

Yes, I wonder if there will be a bikebus shuttle from Galashiels to Innerleithen?
