hmmm B'field only wants two parents, but they do the training with groups of 12 children at a time.

But, as you say, I was wondering about something earlier/broader than that i guess.

they do it in P6 at Dean park - now in fact. They need six parents of the children at the school to volunteer as helpers. THis takes a morning.

BUt I think what we are talking about is some way of having learning to cycle for all children when they start school?

Had a chat with a cycle trainer today. I tried to get road training (level 2 I guess) for my P1 child at Sciennes two years ago. nothing available so I resorted to John Franklin's excellent Cyclecraft book and trained her myself. My second child cycled on road to school from day one of P1, but she is in small minority. Sciennes very open to suggestion about training younger children to ride. Also contacted Active for Schools Co-ordinator and PTA (suggesting sponsored cycle) to raise topic.

The Active Schools coordinators are targeting the level 2 training (on-road, about P7) because it prepares pupils for the move to secondary school and probably independent travel to school.

They don't have the trainer resources in Edinburgh to be able to offer all three levels, hence the prioritisation. Indeed they offered free training to volunteers in the south of the city earlier this year (on to which I managed to sneak!).

As I recall, Level 1 (~P5) covers basic cycling skills, Level 2 adds traffic/road awareness and Level 3 (~S1) heads into journey planning territory. Level 3 tends to be provided in Bike Clubs, rather than being a formal training programme.

As for accessibility, our school cluster has bought decent bicycles for loan as part of the training, and our Active Schools coordinator is looking into buying balance bikes for use with younger children as well.

If I spot the council offering training to volunteers again, I'll post it to here.

Our school is okay with on road training, at least for the more senior kids. But yes, I was wondering about something like chdot's nursery sort of training. Just thinking that if there were examples of bike training for (some of) P1s through P5s it would make a better case.

I know some of you have experience in this. I'd been looking at the Bikeability pages and noticed that they suggest starting at P5. Nruntsfield does training for P6/7. But one of the neighbours asked today, why don't they start earlier (his kids in P1 and P3), and wants us to try and get the school on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions/advice/experience?
