@Wangi, yep, cycling on Core Paths is entirely legal, even if they are alongside a road.

"Core Path" is being used as the 'reason' that cycling is legal, but I suspect that it's more that it's 'proof' (for CEC lawyers) that cycling is legal - and therefore the No Cycling signs must be removed - like The Meadows...

I suspect (even believe) that, since Access Legislation, it's legal to cycle on the Prom even without the Core Path designation.

I won't be going tonight, but hope some on here do.

Thing to stress is that Access rules are about "responsible use" - i.e. 'legal to cycle' doesn't mean at high speed ignoring pedestrians.

And this is a discussion point at Portobello Community Council tonight:

A reminder that Portobello Community Council have cycling on the Prom on their agenda tonight (Cycling and the Promenade: proposed changes to signage 7:35)

7:30 pm in Portobello Baptist Church Hall, 185 Portobello High Street, EH15 1EU (next door to Portobello Bar)

(I'm expecting some to state that the Prom shouldn't be a core path!)

If you are a regular cyclist / commuter that uses the Prom it might be worth going along to "balance" things.

Cycling is permitted because it's a Core Path - the signage is due to be replaced.

"I have already become a 'bore' in my household, " The trick is to take your household _with_ you on your explores!

Hi everyone

As this is my first post, a quick introduction - I got my first bike in ten years two months ago, after getting a job in the city, and deciding to ditch the car and commute by bike. The daily journey has reminded me just how much I used to love cycling, and I have already become a 'bore' in my household, my wife refusing to listen to any more talk about bikes. This puts me in the (probably?) enviable position of rediscovering Edinburgh all over again from behind the handlebars, and every weekend I discover a new route to somewhere I thought I knew well.

This weekend I ventured southbound through the Innocent Tunnel for the first time (why did no-one warn me about the hill!) and then out to Musselburgh, before heading back via Portabello Promenade. And herein lies my confusion: Open Cycle maps tells me that the prom is a cycle route. Edinburgh City's own website tells me it's a cycle route. Yet once I get there, there are 'no cycling' signs every few lampposts? I am not sure about the legality of this situation, but I gingerly cycled along it, passing a few more confident looking cyclists going the other way. It strikes me that these may have been put up with no consultation, or indeed review of the local bylaws? Would love to hear the forum opinion on this (or indeed to be directed to the relevant thread if it already exists).

Ben
