Tweeted from Edintravel earlier:

Haymarket Terrace carriageway works are due to finish on Sunday 6th Nov. Citybound buses will revert to Rosebery Crescent route.

Hopefully this will mean cycles heading east can also avoid the diversion through Eglinton Cres.

I hope they've considered the effect of large blade-shaped buildings on the wind at ground level; surprise crosswinds in addition to weird short light timings would be a pain.

Well, some people do complain that they should dig one hole and get all the work done at the same time. I suspect they are hoping commuters are avoiding an already conjested Haymarket so making it easier to carry out the work, plus it says 'emergency resurfacing'. Perhaps there is a risk of accident/litigation?

Addition, I don't know what that guy on Eglinton Cres is complaining about, he has his pick of busses to use now.....

So, it's NOT the trams!

"

Roads chiefs have been criticised for creating an “absolute nightmare” for drivers and residents by carrying out repairs on a busy road that was already part of a tram work diversion.

Council staff began work this week on £340,000 of emergency resurfacing works on Haymarket Terrace, one of the busiest routes into the city centre from the west.

The work, which will take three weeks to complete, is taking place at the same time as tram work in the area.

"

http://www.scotsman.com/edinburgh-evening-news/edinburgh/city_chiefs_under_attack_over_road_repair_nightmare_1_1904872

At least, further west, the bus lane 'wins' when it goes to a single lane's width at the point where nonbus eastbound traffic is scraped off. Not that it stops people trying to nip past to save three seconds.

He obviously hasn't read my email as I didn't complain about the "lack" of a cycle lane, I complained that they had left it in and that it led you to nowhere and ultimate trouble! In fact I suggested that they completely cone off the lane to stop cyclists going down it and getting stuck.

Loud frown and sigh.

Dear Andy,

Thank you for your recent comments on the current layout of the Haymarket junction.

The current traffic management at Haymarket has been put in place to allow this section of the Edinburgh Tram project to be constructed. This will include finishing off the remainder of the utility work, installation of tracks, overhead supports and cabling, as well as new signalling equipment. Work is programmed to be completed in mid 2013.

The Council have insisted that the Haymarket junction is allowed to operate as near normal as possible. As a consequence, there will have to be a number of phases of the work to allow this to happen. Each phase of the works will require not just working space, but safety zones and this will put further constraints on the space available for motorists and cyclists. In this case, it was felt that there was not enough space available to retain the dedicated cycle lane, as the traffic lanes had to be moved to allow the new layout to work, as well as allow temporary parking and unloading bays to be installed. The phasing of the works and associated traffic management has been agreed by a working group, consisting of Council officials, Lothian Buses, the contractor and police. The current layout is very similar to that when the main utility diversion works was undertaken earlier and after initial problems were resolved, it worked very well.

The group will discuss constructive comments on the present arrangements at this location and elsewhere along the Tram route and make changes where appropriate.

With regard to pedestrian movements, there are signalised crossing points on Morrison Street, Dalry Road, Clifton Terrace, Grosvenor Street and West Maitland Street. If pedestrians try to cross at other locations, there will be problems with regard to sight lines, confusion caused by the temporary traffic lanes and direction of traffic. Footways have been maintained or temporary ones installed to allow pedestrian access to all premises in the area. I trust this is of assistance. Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

<strike> </strike>

And what have @Edinburgh_CC done with Haymarket now? From the end of Dalry Rd? Are we supposed to cycle into the cones and railings?...

I went this way this evening, on an exploratory detour. I think I understand now!

2 problems;

1 - when lights go green at Dalry Road, traffic still coming through from Morrison St and gets stuck behind buses and taxis squeezing in and out of stops / rank.

2 - it's completely un-obvious that you actually have to turn into the same lane that the traffic going from Morrison Street to Haymarket Terrace is trying to use in the opposite direction (particularly as that traffic is still in it, and trying to use it). It's almost as if you were going to go up Morrison Street. Then, at the last moment you make a quick left/right s-turn into West Maitland. So yeah, 2 streams of traffic going in opposite directions trying to use same single lane... Clever!

I gave it a go eastbound this morning. Lots of things not aware that they weren't a bus, taxi or cycle and skipping past the first eastbound diversion. Mostly solid traffic all along Rosebery/Lansdowne/Grovenor but relatively safe to gingerly edge past. Also had to thread delicately through some stationary traffic sitting in a line from Dalry Road to the Shandwick Place lane all the way along West Maitland Street in order to get to the Torphichen escape.

Hell this morning - eastbound had to <strike>honk</strike> zound-off at stupid peds walking out on a red man - they were not really to blame though - the station had obviously just emptied and there was no space for people to WALK eastbound either.
Then past the lights traffic heading west to A8 had completely jammed up the entire juntion meaning vehicles heading East were $cr£w£d

Went through it today in both directions and it was much better. If I'd known the diversion coming in from the west I'd probably have turned down Magdala Crescent but you don't see the signs until Rosebery Crescent. It was fine though.

Coming back from town the lanes are much clearer although you're still better in the traffic than in the bike lane but the traffic is so slow it's easy to merge in after the lights. You just need to take it easy because everyone is quite unpredictable.

Much, MUCH improved.

Clearly marked, cycle lane markings painted out, it's clear what you have to do. Temporary pedestrian crossings now with lights for both cars and crossing. The little set-outs for the temporary bus stops alongside the tram platform are a bit confusing, but coned off.

My only criticism was the cylists coming out of Haymarket station and deciding that it would be quickest to cycle the wrong way into a one-way stream of traffic, rather than push across pavement and finding a safer place to join the road.

Noticed this morning that the pedestrian footway on south side of Haymarket Terrace has been relocated to the concrete platform for the tram stop. There had been a slight re-arrangement of cones outside the station, but the problem area has not been touched.

Problem at the lights was compounded by 2 Airlink busses sitting nose-to-tail at lights, with first bus sitting completely in ASL box. I elected to cross the line and sit between ASL and the studs for the pedestrian crossing, so at least that way I was infront of bus and in drivers line of sight, and not sitting in his blind spot on the left.

Looks like they're putting back some of the diversions in the area as I noticed new line painting on Magdala Cres this evening. Appears Magdala Cres will be northbound only so I'm guessing eastbound traffic from Roseburn will be diverted that way again.
