I peeked out through my curtains this morning and saw the snow everywhere, so I took my mtb today. It's very wet snow and not that deep so I probably could have used my regular bike after all. Riding 13 miles into the wind and snow wasn't the easiest - or driest - of commutes.

The weather for the past couple of weeks has been fabulous, cold and really crisp mornings, no wind and plenty of sunshine. Last weekend was particularly great, no complaints here at all. I remember it snowing one June, though I could not tell you what year, it was the 1st of June sometime in the late 70's or early 80's. Edinburgh always seemed to have a prevailing easterly wind blowing when I was much younger and this now appears to have changed and it is predominantly a westerly. Summers spent outside with cardigans and coats on as there was always cold in the biting wind coming off the North Sea, brrrr

Sorry, May 24th is Victoria Day weekend. "Celebrates the birthday of the reigning Canadian monarch; however, the date does not change with the change of monarch, being instead fixed on the birthday of Queen Victoria, the sovereign at the time of Canadian Confederation and establishment of Dominion status in 1867."

Should have been clearer. It is when the parks open, so everyone goes camping or to cabins or whatever. "May 24th is Queen Victoria's birthday it is a national holiday in the whole of Canada but celebrated with a special fervor here in Newfoundland. May 24th weekend, or May Two-Four as it is sometimes called, marks the unofficial start of summer..." (hence the usual snowfall...)

"queen's offical birthday - a much bigger holiday in the colonies than here"

UK/Edinburgh prefer celebrating the previous Queen.

In Nfld, we almost invariably got snow on May 24th weekend (queen's offical birthday - a much bigger holiday in the colonies than here). Rarely much after that, but not impossible.

My friend in Nunavut (baffin island), says their temps are unseasonably warm again "Environment Canada is telling me right now that it's -5C outside. Big fluffy snow flakes have been falling for the better part of two days, and there was a while there this afternoon, when trying to navigate through a thick fog that had descended down upon the city where I'm pretty sure I felt some light drizzle.....However, in Iqaluit, in February, this is not supposed to be happening. This is one of the deep freeze months. We're not supposed to get much in the way of snow and if the temperate is warmer than -30C you're having a pretty good day. So this is deeply, deeply weird time in town."

Still 5 days til March. It snowed in Balerno once on June 17th. We moved here on St Patrick's Day 2001 and it was a glorious sunny day. The next day - total whiteout. Everyone started in with the -"ooooh, you'll need a sledge to get the kids to school" routine. This did not happen, err until this winter.

that is a terrible forecast. As my buddy from the road Stuart pointed out when he caught me tonight (I am definitely going down with something) - it has been cold but there have been some tremendous cycling days as there has been little wind. THe gritters were out on the lanark road tonight.
