@CyclingEdin Thank you for your inquiry, I am in the process of passing this on to the correct department to be looked into. Jemma
@donnellyherald retweeting @stephennaysmith:

Scottish councils' experiment with 24 hour Twitter updating well under way #whatwedo. Interestingly some critics now using the tag as well.

True

But the only thing I ever reported wasn't fixed - 3 years on (CEC) - so maybe I'm just biased...

Not an either/or. Whatever works works. Twitter is CEC's current fad, so maybe, perhaps(?)

Whever I've used Fixmystreet it comes right back with a FMS acknowledgement and then with one from the relevant council that it is forwarded on to. Has worked for Edinburgh / Midlothian / East Lothian / Clakmannanshire anyway. It also goes into a big map of all the different reported incidents so it gives visibility to the public of incidents already reported.

FMS have always followed up with an automated "well, did they fix it then?" message.

"Why not use FixMyStreet instead?"

Lots of reasons.

One - it may or may not go into the same black hole that sometimes seems to be Clarence.

Two - (for as long as it lasts) some bits of CEC are interested in hearing from it's 'customers'.

Three - although the person dealing with the Twits may just be passing things on to the Road section, they can add in local knowledge and (if more than person reports something) they realise there may well be an 'issue'.

Four - This is genuinely working in terms of getting action and/or feedback.

Five - I could mention consultation, ownership, empowerment, customer-focus

but I wouldn't believe it either....

"it'll label it as whatever it thinks the nearest address is and doesn't enable re-labelling"

Same on iPhone

BUT

Has 'e-mail this location' option - which e-mails coordinates of pin. Also "Add to Contacts" where it can be re-named but doesn't seem to save any geodata!

A-ha. Map page bookmarked.
Android/Googlemaps does save the marker at the point at which the map is pressed but it'll label it as whatever it thinks the nearest address is and doesn't enable re-labelling, either through the phone app or through maps.google.co.uk.

The map of the 12 is here -

http://www.edinburghnp.org.uk/neighbourhood-partnerships

Pick'n'mix any two to form your perfect team!

"One of the irritating things about the Android implementation of Google Maps"

That's surprising as they are both Google!

I suspect there is a way. On the iPhone there is a "drop pin" option in (Google) Maps

Knowing which team_area I'm travelling through without having to go through the find-the-postcode-then-enter-it-on-the-website rigmarole would be handy. If they had a map of the area boundaries on the website it would help.

One of the irritating things about the Android implementation of Google Maps is that it only lets you save locations which have actual addresses. When I've had to record precise locations of off-road path network gripes I switched GPS on then took a photo of the nearest lamp-post on which the number was legible. The Symbian version allowed any random point to be saved along with a note/description for transcription later.

"postcode to use would be the one nearest the nearest access point"

Postcode more to work out which area you are in rather than pinpointing place.

On off-road paths note down number on nearest light.

Hmmm. Presumably where a bit of off-road path squeezes between postcodes the postcode to use would be the one nearest the nearest access point.

Standard way is Clarence - see Clarenced and pending thread

Now CEC is divided into 12 Neighbourhood Partnerships -

http://www.edinburghnp.org.uk

There's a Postcode Search so you know which one you are in - or where the 'problem' is.

These are also paired to produce 6 teams

Five are on Twitter

South

West

South West - confusing eh! (This one joined Twitter today so will be wanting to play with its new toy.)

North

East

"The City Centre & Leith NeighbourhoodsTeam is now on Facebook. But we are not doing twitter"

I've had several good interactions with my local one - some by Direct Message (i.e. private) but doing things 'publicly' can be useful...

Other people are definitely using this to report things like large amounts of litter and Team seems to go and clear it up!
