Ahem, we have Princes St too at the moment don't forget.

Actually I was on Princes St on Sunday and it was remarkably quiet with no buses (and no tram works), despite the number of shoppers out and about.

Plus, Mulltrees Walk was designed as a pedestrian street/walk as its name suggests. I do see the odd cyclist but the security are quite good at preventing this. I have also seen Polics cyclists. I wonder if security questioned them?

ruggtomcat: that was my experience of Germany too. The towns, even small ones had cars banned from at least one main street.

I'm sure Multrees 'NO CYCLING" Walk would be very offended to be omitted from that short list.

Upon getting back from Europe where every town has at least one walking street I was amazed to realize that Edinburgh only has Rose street and a hundred meters of the Royal mile as its only pedestrianized area. In Copehnagen the entire center is pedestrianized (no bikes either). Even tiny towns in Germany have more walking area than us!

In Edinburgh this would translate into a call for a traffic ban combined with a demand for compensation due to traffic restrictions.

"Well everyone knows that if you can't park a car outside a shop the shop may as well just board itself up."

Indeed.

As I wrote to a City Centre councillor to day -

"I would be surprised if Apple and Primark were making their investments based on expectations of improved/more car parking. "

[sarcasm]

It's probably the experience of having seen how Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street are deserted of shoppers on a Saturday that makes Edinburgh retailers and councillors so reluctant to go down the route of pedestrianisation

[/sarcasm]

Here was me thinking this was the 'West End Village' realising that on narrow cobbled streets making it easy for people to walk about might help business.

Too much to ask for, clearly.
