Yesterday, wore fingerless gloves and like others realised it was a bit nippy, today I planned ahead and broke out the full fingered gloves, light fleece and warm hat.... so obviously today it was mild and felt warm, sigh :-/

Nice socks. Let me get this right - you can get sealskinz waterproof socks for inside your shoes that you can also walk in. You can get goretex waterproof socks for inside your shoes that are no good for walking in, you can get waterproof bootees or let's face it galoshes for over the shoe and now socks for outside the shoe but which aren't waterproof.

Also plastic carrier bags [not designed for feet, just from the food shops?]

anything else?

there are such things as non-waterproof 'knit' overshoes

I have two pairs of these 'over socks'...

Not to protect any fancy cycling shoes but to keep my feet warm when it's cold. Wearing the red ones I do look a bit like a weird cycling geek - but I like them! and they work in the cold weather

I had an eyebleedingly fugly hi-viz raincoat I got for a fiver out of Bethany(longsleeve-T underneath was more to combat its hilarious unbreathability than the cold), pair of waterproof breeks, lightweight workie's gloves and a laptop bag for nine quid total out of the Omni carboot and hiking boots for two quid at the Chesser carboot. Oh, and a beard I got for less than free.

It certainly passed today's test with flying colours; we'll see how it does when it gets proper cold.

Given the futility of attempting to find shoes-which-fit-which-are-also-waterproof, I was just having a quick poke around at overshoes and discovered that there are such things as non-waterproof 'knit' overshoes, to "protect your favourite race shoes" (presumably whilst being worn, rendering the box they came in unsuitable). Protect them from what? Sight? Fading in the sunlight?

"You sound like one of these people who makes loose-fitting shoes fit more snugly by pouring gravel into your socks"

Like I say, different people have different sensitivities. I have absolutely no idea at all how anyone could live in a flat, hearing their neighbours' stereos and kids and walking. To me they sound like people who make noisy neighbours more bearable by playing death metal at 3am through their iPod in bed...

Yes I can feel the cleat. That simply does not amount to 'uncomfortable' to me. I can't really change my automatic unconscious perceptions (which I'm quite glad about - if I found it uncomfortable I'd have to chuck out an expensive pair of shoes...).

My Northwave touring shoes are on the verge of collapse. All the rubbery/foamy padding stuff at the back of heel has fallen out and the cleats are now felt through the sole to the point of beginning to be annoyingly uncomfortable. I hope to get a few more weeks out of them before consigning to the bin. I think I've "only" got about 5,000 miles out of them.

I wore my jacket, but otherwise still in shorts, summer shoes, fingerless mitts. I thought I had put my warm merino t-shirt on under the jacket, turns out I just wore a random grey cotton t-shirt that looked the same without my glasses on. Soaked up the moisture and then refused to wick it through.

"The MT60s are not remotely comfortable, though. Fortunately I was able to detect this in the shop whereas anth had to buy them and wear them for a few months."

Ah now, I've never actually said they were uncomfortable. On the bike still no worries (and warm feet). Off the bike I can feel the cleat through the sole, but not to the point of being annoyingly uncomfortable. Comes down to different 'breaking points' I think.

I'm more sensitive to noise than other folk after years of bad neighbours before we moved (then moved again due to even worse neighbours); whereas I'm happy with shoes on which I can feel the cleats slightly when walking (though thinking on it, this morning, I'm not sure the problem has been as apparent...)

I had an excellent pair of gloves 'windstoppers' - just a very light, comfortable shell, with no insulation. In a lovely extra small size. Lost one. Still have the other in case its mate ever miraculously appeared. Best gloves ever for Edinburgh cycling.

The MT60s are not remotely comfortable, though. Fortunately I was able to detect this in the shop whereas anth had to buy them and wear them for a few months. I got a puddle on the foot this morning which demonstrated that Tahoes are not waterproof, but if the price for that is being able to walk several miles at a time in them or not having numb feet from my toes being crushed, so be it.

Apart from occasionally wondering if I might wonder if it was a good idea to have forgotten my long-fingered gloves on the way home on the way in, it was nice this morning.

Jings, that was a cold commute this morning! It was 7°C when I left the house. Shorts, tights, Goretex, gloves, and my lights. And Shimano MT42 shoes are not remotely waterproof. Maybe I ought to have bought the MT60s after all.
