A further email -

"
We have tried the commuting routes at commuting time however we get very little attention as people just want to get to work or get home after a busy day, hence why we went for a lunchtime. We will be looking at weekends to see if that helps.

"

SO - really are looking for places/times that have/could attract people with bikes.

Might be better setting up outside some bike shops.

Maybe http://www.stockbridgemarket.com - two bike shops nearby.

It's one thing to find somewhere with a high partial pressure of cyclists in the traffic but people on purposeful journeys don't always want to stop.

The 11:00 - 13:00 timeslots of the last event might not be convenient for many despite it being technically lunchtime. The stopping-traffic part of the events lasted all day; as the tagging only required two people and a box it shouldn't deplete resources too much to have it over a slightly longer period, including at least one end of the standard working day.

People heading in from/out to the various bypass-level nodes might conceivably be going greater distances than city-centre lunchtime bimblers and might therefore have cycles they would be keen on preventing the theft or increasing the recoverability of. Presumably there are people other than Instography who ride on a bicycle rather than a bus out of park-and-ride sites. Presumably Haymarket or Waverley (possibly even some of the smaller active stations) would see a great deal of cycle traffic over a couple of hours at the start and end of the day, and could be particularly interested in theft-prevention.

Have Critical Masses stopped for now until daylight returns to their usual timeslot? As well as there potentially being a fair few cycles to tag it's the sort of thing which might benefit greatly from a helpful and interested police presence.

Just had an email from the policeman behind this -

"
Following our week of Bike marking we are getting numerous enquiries (mainly through twitter) about when we are next marking bikes. We are looking to run some more bike marking events. As discussed last week it would make sense for us to tie in with the work you are already carrying out.

"

Anyone think of any upcoming events that might benefit from a police visit?

Or good times/days/places.

There's always PY...

Or other less central??

Gyle/EP?

Following on from this, it may be of interest to know that L&BP can only read Datatag RFID chips, that is those associated with Bikeregister.com. They can not read the ImmobiTags used by the competing Immoblise.com, although they do reference both associated property databases.
