Hmm. Looks like Copenhagen's modal share actually decreased last year, from a high of 37% in 2008, to 35% in 2010. :(

http://velotraffic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/bicycle-account-2010-copenhagen.pdf

Looks like they have the 'stubborn driver problem' even in cycling nirvana:
"Today there are 45,000 people who drive a car between 2 and 10 km to work in Copenhagen on a daily basis, most of whom reside outside the Municipality of Copenhagen. If half of those trips and one third of car trips of 10-15 km are transferred to bicycles, the bicycle market share would rise to approx. 45 %." (p.22)

According to these out of date stats (7 years old or more!) Aarhus had 27% and Copenhagen 36% modal share for cycling. For comparison Amsterdam was at 22%.

Let's assume that those figures may have increased by a fair amount since then in Denmark at least, maybe 33%, and 45% respectively. Another 50% of each would give 49.5% and 67.5% respectively!

Or am I just hopelessly optimistic about the current modal shares?

Edinburgh is on, what? 2%? Maybe 2.5% on a nice day during the university term?

Kapps arithmetic spot on

Big Count estimated we were at 3.6% but If asked what I thought of their methods I would go for Martin Sheen's response to Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now (see also Heart of Darkness).

Think government aim is to not make cycling too popular by constraining routes for bikes.

the zig-zags mentioned on the Aquaduct thread are a great way to discourage too much cycle use.!

Pretty cool tho as Copenhagen (and Denmark in general) has hands down the best infrastructure of any city I've been too, to improve on the best is a noble challenge!

If you are at 2%, then that's increasing it to 3% is it not?

Of course the higher the share that cycling has, the higher a value "50% of that share" will be.

“My political vision is to increase the modal share of cycling by 50 % over 10 years and that at least half of all new bike rides represent a switch from car to bike. This requires that we build more and better cycle tracks and that it becomes attractive to choose the bicycle over the car.”
