Bit of thread necromancy here, but thought it would be of interest - the Police's cycling training manual is available for download via an FoI request.

It's Cycling Scotland's "Cycle Patrol" course, which appears to be broader than simply a police resource.

I completely forgot that I have the PrejudiceConverter (TM) switched on now, and was perplexed to be reading a story which featured such comments as:

"... in particular focus on fellow black men breaking the law... there is considerable public demand that it be robustly enforced."

Tom, "I saw a police cyclist on Sunday cycling along the pavement near Port Seton and just a few seconds too late to see me getting left-hooked by a car turning into the holiday camp. He gave me a friendly wave though."

I've heard that Canning Street has been made one-way temporarily (for which read "for many months") due to construction work that is going on round the back there, meaning that some pretty big lorries are rolling out that way. Safety first.

Nope. At least it wasn't for the 6 years I used it until moving job earlier in the year. Seems an odd one to close off in one direction...

At least that's if we're talking about Canning Street. The Rutland Square link there IS one way. But nice short get-off-and-walk until you get to the square itself which is two way all the way round.

"
Cycle-safety week - I didn't even know this was happening. But apparently it was and included interventions with drivers and cyclists. Lothian & Borders Police put out a press release about it, picked up by STV local (watch out for the ads). This angers me. Both stories start off with "247 cyclists" being stopped.

"..CEC has a bee in its bonnet about rat runs.."

In inconsistent bee at best. They don't seem to be willing to tackle a rat run if it would divert significant trafic back onto a choke point.

The recommended cycle route from the canal south along Craiglockhart Road is a case in point.

247 cyclists advised (RLJ, pavement cycling, security/safety)

There was a foot-constable lurking in the temporarily-one-way-again chunk of Canning Street this morning. There were a couple there earlier in the week who jabbed a taxi-wielder for turning in from Shandwick Place.

I sometimes use the Shandwick Place > Canning St right turn to get through to the Rutland Square path over the West Approach Road, and I came across those No Entry signs this evening. I mean, why? :-/ I know CEC has a bee in its bonnet about rat runs but this is a bit ridiculous. I did wonder why there isn't a policy to install the 'Except Cycles' sign more often.

Next time I'll just take the Torphichen St > Dewar Place route instead, and hold up all the traffic until I get past the EICC.

I narrowly avoided being plucked by a police cyclist yesterday morning, when I realised that my newly-discovered cut through at Picardy Place rb is actually one way the other way!

Luckily, I discovered this by spotting the cunningly concealed no entry sign, and so I was walking past the police when I spotted him, not riding...

Unfortunate, as it's very wide, quiet, and can avoid a serious amount of traffic surfing if it's very busy.

Did he have a white hat?

I spoke to a nice traffic cop (he had a white cap and big volvo), the traffic department are working alongside the bicycle cops in their efforts. I liked what he was saying. It sounds like a very positive direction the police are heading in. Lets hope its not a one week wonder.

There was a foot-constable lurking in the temporarily-one-way-again chunk of Canning Street this morning. There were a couple there earlier in the week who jabbed a taxi-wielder for turning in from Shandwick Place.

If they were at Shandwick Pl/Haymarket this morning that may have been because Mr McAskill was giving a speach to the Justice Leaders Network at CoSLA. Lots of senior police around.
