We don't let rain put us off either, unless by some chance we leave the house ill-equipped for the conditions. My son has a bright yellow cycling rain cape plus black waterproof trousers. This combination keeps just about anything out. If he has wellies on then his feet are dry too.</p> <p>All fine for short trips, but on longer journeys the chilling effect of the wet can be a problem. We tried to cross Edinburgh on a very wet day in June, had to give up at the Meadows and visit the Pavilion cafe instead. Wet feet and hands became very cold, even though the air temperature was mild. Son had no waterproof overshoes, and his fleece gloves left at home due to an oversight.
