Yep, tarmac was wet this morning in central Dundee. Luckily rain had stopped by the time I arrived. Could be more on the way though, and also this evening when I get back to Edina.

Don't know about weathering from the rain, as I suspect that the key issue there is the quality/durability of the sandstone used.

From experience, a bigger issue is likely to be tenements' valley roof, which is often a tiny diameter pipe which can't cope with some of the torrential downpours we've been having the past few summers...

I think the introduction of Statutory Notices in the mid 2000's will have a greater affect on buildings in Edinburgh than a slight increase in the overall temp. Cycling through Edinburgh recently, for the first time in 6 years, before I moved to Cambs. I saw stretches of nearly 100% new stone work on a lot of 1900's Sandstone tenement buildings, which can only be attributed to the Statutory Notices served on Tenement blocks whose faces were crumbling on a dangerous scale.

"

A five-year plan has been drafted to research the effects of climate change on historic buildings in Edinburgh's World Heritage site.

It is feared changes in rainfall patterns, heavy winds and rise in temperatures could increase the damage and weathering of the site's buildings.

Over the past four months, Edinburgh World Heritage has been looking into the issue of climate change.

It said rainfall was the big thing Edinburgh had to address.

"
Meanwhile, experts said the Lothians and the rest of the country could be in for another brutal “Siberian winter”, bringing increased energy bills and transport chaos.

Despite a £15 million spending spree on stockpiling salt and snow-clearing equipment, forecaster Jonathan Powell said it was likely there would still be some problems.

He said: “The coldest spells will not be as sustained as last year, but these episodes are expected to be severe, with freezing temperatures, snow, ice and harsh frosts. They will bring Siberian temperatures.”

Thanks guys, I read this yesterday on their website. My query with them is whether I can carry my non folding bike to work on the particular service I use as the bus does not differ daily. It is a bus and not a coach so I assume limited under seating space avaialble. My plan would be to bus to work and cycle home.

Currently the train one way is 4.40 GBP but a 12 journey pass is only 24 GBP (2GBP per journey). I don't mind what the weather is like on an evening but heading into work where I have a start time and an early start in order to get showered etc.. makes it less attractive. My current comute is approx 1hr 20 mins by bike.

It was pretty unpleasant riding in this morning, but not necessarily the worst of the year. With the sun now out my troos are draoed over the wee cabinet under my desk on the window side gently drying off.

DaveC - Stagecoach conditions of carriage:

http://www.stagecoachbus.com/conditionsofcarriage.aspx

This states:

"6) Carriage of Bicycles
Non folding bicycles are only carried on a very limited number of buses specifically modified for the purpose. Generally, bicycles may be carried at the owner’s risk on coaches, as opposed to buses, where luggage boots are available.

Safety notices governing their carriage are clearly posted on the relevant vehicles with further information available from the local Stagecoach operating company.

Folding bicycles, safely and securely stowed in the designated luggage area in a suitable bag or box, may be carried on all vehicles."

Now, whether the drivers all know this is another question, but folding bikes can clearly be carried on these buses, as long as you have a bag for them.

Too windy for me today. I have to cross the Forth Road Bridge if I cycle into work. The bus stop is 20 yeards from my house and My office is above the bus station. The down side is I don't think I can bring a non folding bike on the bus, I have emailed cust serv to ask. The train lets me bring in the bike but the tickets are weekly (33 GBP) as oppossed to the bus where they just stamp on of the 12 journeys I get for 24 GBP, so offering a time loss but cost saving.

(Sorry my stupid PC on Citrix over Linux keyboard at work doens't let me use the pound sign.)

@SRD. Snow trousers should be water proofs so if we were going I'd take then for our two. You can always unzip the snow jacket but if your cold without it you'll wish you brought it. But then If your on a cycle holiday lots of layers to peel off as you need would be better than one thick jacket. How much do you plan to stand around (whilst they play at the swings) and how much time do you plan to spend exercising?

Hope you have a loverly break, I love Aviemore.

Best to keep an eye on JourneyCheck for live updates on rail services.

Currently showing:

"Line problem between Edinburgh and Inverkeithing. Train services between Edinburgh and Inverkeithing are being disrupted due to signalling problems. "
