@wingpig

FYI, it's not SWIP's car park, it belongs to Capital House (the office building beside the Filmhouse).

And there's plenty wrong with Chuckie Pend apart from contractors (appallingly uneven setts & many, many stinky bins for instance).

So a private company went into receivership because CEC were offering too many on-street parking spaces at below market rate?

There's nothing wrong with Chuckie Pend, especially now that the contractors working in SWIP's car park have stopped blocking it with up to eight vans.

I love the school holidays, and include university/colleges in the loop as well. I can get out onto the main road so easily. I also do not have to contend with the rat run that the street that I live on becomes during term times. A great many parents take time off when the kids are off to go on holiday abroad or elsewhere in the UK, so are not here driving around. At the other end of the day the 'rush' hour co-incides with the schools finishing and also tradesmen/women finishing work at about 3.30.

But have you ever noticed how quiet the roads are in half/end of term?

Lots of people drive their children to school oftern less than a mile from home.

That's certainly part of it. I think that when the kids are at home, whichever parent has to look after them may not be nipping around town so much on post-school run errands. Mind you, there will be car runs with the kids to soft play centres, holiday clubs and various kids' activities...

Many universities are on half term too, so students and lecturers are less likely to be adding to the rush hour crush.

So who are all these people clogging up the roads during 'rush' hour??

I suspect most are just crossing town. But have you ever noticed how quiet the roads are in half/end of term?

I suspect it's a similar reason that many new homes are empty, to lease them at a lower value would possibly decrease the book value of them?

Lots of folk holding out for the good times ahead?

If office supply is in such demand why does there appear to be so much lying empty or abandoned?

Recent examples debated here include the now-demolished Balfour Stewart house (the main "selling point" for which seemed to be how much car parking it had!), the empty and perhaps asbestosful St James' House (formerly New St Andrew House), former Scottish Provident office on St Andrew Square, former Standard Life office complex at Tanfield, former GPO on Waterloo Place, Argyle House at Lady Lawson Street, former DHSS building at Haymarket, former Job Centre on Torphicen Place... Not to mention large parts of the Gyle and Edinburgh Park empty, some even never occupied... I'm sure there is plenty more as these were just off top of my head.

Probably not -

"And it has been left idle for so long, the car park's complicated mechanisms now need a complete overhaul before it can be used again."

Apparently Edinburgh has absolutely no problems with parking, there's ample room in the many parking buildings throughout the place. Whether people want to pay for it though.

I want to know if the 600 space robo-park will ever open.

The cost of office space is pretty much level across the city as far as I heard from our move last year (similar to an office move I was part of in 2003). The central location is a result of the transport hub for people living out of town (trins & Bus Station), and also usefull for those still living in tenement flats but who also want to be able to walk/cycle to work.

Our office has no parking, other collegues on the other end of town (Haymarket) had parking but limited to 6, which were usually empty when I worked there. Now they are blocked in due to tram works.

This seems to be a reprint of an estate agent's press release, but seems to being saying that large companies still want to be in the centre of the city in spite of the 'traffic problem'.

Though perhaps the people who make the decisions know they will always have a space in the underground car park(?)
