I have a Barley saddlebag in Harris tweed which looks very smart on my handsome three speed.

I bought it as a second through their eBay store; I managed to get it for about £40. One of the holes for the strap has been cut slightly squint, but otherwise it is perfect.

Had a nice chap stop me in the ASL at Angle Park asking me where I got my saddle bag, I told him Carradice directly but the bike trax sell them. He pointed at his current one which was apparently 40 year old and falling to bits, owner looked like he may have had from new...

I tried to get behind him along Slateford to get a look at the brand but even when I pulled into the traffic queue he didn't filter. So don't know what his was but it looked like it was vinyl rather than cotton.

The national radio museum bit is the only part I didn't visit. I saw the codebreaking machine 'Bombe' and the rebuilt 'Colossus' both operating though! Went heron watching by the large pond/small lake in the gardens too.

Camper Longflap handled a long touring weekend last year with ease - they reckon you can jam in 20kg, and the Nelson is not much smaller - suspect that seatposts/SQR blocks will give out long before the carradice does.

Also used to commute 4 days a week - tomorrow will be jeans/t-shirt/trainers, various odds and sods and still wont even need to deploy the long flap.

Best bit of bike kit ever (except buffs, of course).

Bought mine from Biketrax - great carradice wall, good to see it might even get better!

Another Nelson Longflap here. Fantastic bit of kit, massively too big for the commute most days but always handy to have the extra space when you need it.

Easily handled my full on camping tour last year with just the sleeping bag on the bars.

I was in BikeTrax yesterday and bought a second seatpost QR mount so I can carry the bag on t'other bike as well. The bag itself needs a bit of TLC - daily commuting has made the wooden bar that holds it rigid at the back come loose. Absolutely nothing to do with sotpping at the shops occasionally on the way home and testing the design limits loaded up with dress down Friday clothing plus weekend alcohol in the back....

Ah, now that's a useful photo! Which bag is that? I'm thinking of getting a Carradice for commuting and credit-card touring instaed of a rucksack (which gives me back-ache after too long) but I can't work out what size I want. Mind you, if biketrax still have a wall of Carradices, all I need to do is go there.

Looking through the 'Bay today I see that vintage Carradice bags are fairly easy to come by. But is it proper to be a mere whippersnapper with SPDs and disc brakes and all that newfangled stuff but with a 30 year-old cotton duck bag slung from one's bike? I agree that scuffs and mends and faded black are badges of mileage, but what if the bag is actually older than the rider? Is that cheating?

No matter because my Super C panniers are still as black as they were last month. But now I have a nearly-new Super C saddlebag in the post.

I think Carradice ought to start making sandals.

The plus side of my volunteering day is that I had more stuff than I could fit in my little dry bag. So I dug out my little saddle bag I modded earlier in the year, it wasn't a very good saddle bag because of the closure mechanism but upright on the bars it'll do nicely.

I measured the length of bar I had spare isn't as much as I though and even the Barley will probably foul the brake hoses the this little bag is small enough to just fit. I think I may have a project in the new year.... Always wanted to (re)learn to sew....

I've been looking on eBay, did this time last year too.. but they're so expensive most of the time your only saving a few quid over buying it new from Wiggle.

I had a similar problem, decided to go with the QR block for the Nelson; Saves pulling stuff out the bag when I get to work, I just grab the whole bag and take it with me. Plus it gives the bag a handle. Its expensive for what it is but it makes the whole saddlebag arrangement so much more convenient.

@steveo, I picked up a 'vintage' Junior saddlebag on fleaBay. Unused. Has the old Carradice logo, big reflective red triangle on back. Black with white straps, lovely blue cotton lining, bit of dowel along top inner. No LED loop though.

Haven't used the thing in anger yet, due to lack of eyelets under saddles to connect straps to (no Brooks you see). Tried bodging arrangements with toeclip straps, etc. but not working. Either after-market saddle bag loops (pricey) or the old standby, cable ties, may be necessary.

Very much doubt i'll make it, we got a volunteering day at Hopeton house clearing paths etc....

That's the thinking, its only to take my work stuff when I've got the baby seat on the back and can't fit the Nelson.

If you'll be at PY tomorrow you're welcome to inspect.

It's pretty stable, and compact (if I wanted a big bag, I'd have a large saddlebag, or a pannier).

Excellent timing Dave, I'm just trying to decide on a bar bag. It'll be on the hardtail so width is much less of an issue but droop is more of a problem, got to keep it of the suspension fork crown.

I was thinking the Junior but I think i've just convinced my self the Barley would be better, its wider and shallower than the Junior.

(I did put this on my new bike topic, but realised it's probably quite useful here, for the Carradice affectionadoes)
