"easy win for Apple"

Not only do iPhones do screengrabs - simply (press the two mechanical buttons) - the result is stored as a normal photo with ones taken on the camera.

Ah, I see.
Normal photos are fine, and can be sent from the phone in the various usual ways but screen captures need PC invlovement, and the captured screen image file ends up on the PC.
Can't understand why some Droids and W7 don't make this easy though, easy win for Apple.

And finally, just to finish OT..

Back on the learning curve today so having mastered the infamous "Hello World" Android app, tried a screen capture.

Takes about 10mins for the first capture by the time you install ADK (free) and pretty instant thereafter. You do need a PC (other computing devices _are_ available) though.

Happy to go through the steps by PM if anybody is interested/cares/is a geek/has a "friend" who is or might be a geek....

And me. Several 'droids offer three-finger salute (cntrl-alt-del) hidden features that do a screen grab and it's built in to the development kit. I think it must be a function that's been excluded for a reason, but I can't think why.

And still OT, Nokia was originally a paper mill and electricity generation company in the 1860s, and grew into a major rubber products and cable manufacturer before turning to telecoms. No coincidence that Nokian Tyres has a similar name, as it only became a separate entity from Nokia in 1988. </QI>

Nope, again, nothing 'pops up' except for text messages (which iOS5 actually copies slightly from WP) it's a bit more subtle and cooler than that, it just kind of is. And it's not really a multitasking thing either.

It's such a different approach that it doesn't parallel with the other platforms.

Stil pictures don't really do the home page much justice, there is constant activity on the screen, but not so that's it's annoying if you are trying to do something with it.

One of the biggest benefits apple has is that they build an OS that runs perfectly on a very limited variety of hardware. Windows/Linux will run to varying degrees of success on pretty much anything (in a computing sense).

MS has learned lessons from Apple on this in the phone sense.

Yep.

There was a lot of 'fuss' a while ago about iPhones not running multiple apps 'properly'. That 'complaint' seems to have gone away.

Unless l misunderstand, you seem to be talking about pop-up widgets which I'd probably find intrusive!

Interesting what you were saying about Windows allowing limited scope for hardware manufacturers to change things. Seem to be a real Android issue.

Yep, but what I mean is that now even third party apps can communicate to you without you having to open them.

Say the weather app has a live tile so I don't have to open it or the calendar app, or the people tiles I have give me information such as facebook/twitter statuses, if I've been conacted in some manner by said person.

Then the music hub cross links to all the music and video apps I have, and the pictures hub can access from various sources.

It's just all a bit more meshed. And there are shed loads of very subtle eye candy.

Horses for courses as is just a different approach, and one I particularly like. What it doesn't feel like is an overly MS product, but think it's all going to converge on Win 8.

Meh, just different packaging round an awesome OS. It's designed so as only to be customisable by the manufacturers in a very tiny manner. Makes the 'grid of apps' model of the iphone/android seem a bit old fashioned.

I like the typographic nature of it too, but then again I like typography.
