p21 of the Scotman motoring section

"In the past month I've halved my journey time to and from work..."

Still can't find it on line though!

There is a bike review in the Scotsman's online motoring section - but it's the Suzuki GSR750, which as far as I know doesn't rely on human power.

I was about to say, SRD. It's not in the EEN but could be the Scotsman.

At least they're honest about it.

The internet has pretty much levelled the market for media reviews because you know (at least, you and I know) how easy it is to find the opinion of genuine owners.

"Car and tech reviews are full of this stuff."

The car section of the Scotland on Sunday last week had a '4x4 special' which was reading to me like an advertisement section. 6 pages or so, and then noticed at the top of the page the statement, "Some of the editorial content in this section has been included at the request of sponsors or advertisers".

Halfords mountain bike,

The number one rule for getting a review in the media is whether there is any chance of ad revenue coming back their way. Obviously Halfords is a potential advertiser. (or a known brand)

Bikes sold by other niche players are of no interest as they can't afford to place ads. So the less something is advertised the less it will be written about. Witness how much 'free' publicity brand leaders get - papers read and believe the ads and often quote PR directly as 'received wisdom'. Car and tech reviews are full of this stuff.

Interestingly when doing my stint of advertising with the Big Issue last year I asked whether they might just consider a bike based article on (eg) the school run or bike use in Edinburgh. (So I could plug the Helios but other retailers would have benefitted too)

I'm still waiting....!

My reasoning was that the Big Issue likes to deal with social issues and of course i've got to know the guy who sells on MMW.

Don't what if the article ran or not - didn't see it on-line. Will try to find out.

One good upshot is that neighbour has taken to commuting to work on the bike, which makes one more cycling parent on our school run (yay!).

Downside is that it is a Halfords mountain bike, with incredibly nobbly tyres, so review is (probably) of a mountain bike being used as a commuter...

Does it go really fast then, if it warrants a mention in the motoring section? Perhaps one of those battery operated/dynamo driven bikes? I suppose we are just going to have to wait and see!
