Completely forgot about a nice one from last week. Approaching the crossing of Duddingston Road West on the Innocent, schoolkids walking past the crossing. One of whom looks at and acknowledges me, and presses the button on the crossing before I'm there. Just a wee friendly moment.

Must have been a morning for it, top of the Innocent a cyclist coming the other way waits for me to slog up the steep bit - very unusual for someone not to go for the gap heading downhill if there's a chance they can make it.

I was poking at my rear light at the side of Peffermill Road last night, confirming that the reason for it not being on was the spade terminal having snapped, when a passing cyclist stopped to check if I needed any help. Only the second time ever it's happened that way round. THYCLIST.

@edd1e_h thanks anyway!

Had a good look again on the way home (10 minutes of walking a grid across likely area) but no sign of it. Must have bounced onto main road or down a drain and been lost for good.

Top tip to reward you for your help is don't turn right where you did, but turn next right - saves at least 20 seconds which is how I got from behind you to infront of you with no extra effort.

@kaputnik - it was me!

No problem, and sorry I wasn't much help in finding it.

Actually, after reading the previous thread about helping people with punctures, it inspired me to wait that bit longer at the junction to see what was up...

Cheers :)

Resurrecting this as a pre-existing "thanks" thread.

Thanks to cyclist on silver, hub-geared, Brooks-saddled, Audax-type bike who helped me look for the dinger off my bell when it finally gave in to the relentless pounding of lower Gilmore Place and disassembled itself this morning.

No luck finding it, but hopeful will find it when I'm less pressed for time this evening.

I suspect this is a fault that could be caused by spray off rear guard maybe?

The switch is underneath so maybe collects water. Or how much time a bike stays parked outdoors maybe? (!)

I've fitted to a lot of bikes now so getting worried. Relatively cheap light and seemed to be well designed too.

Other thing is to clean battery connections if they are corroded (speaking from not doing that the other night!) Some batteries can still move in holders and lose contact.

When I couldn't get it to turn on, despite not having used it over summer, I thought it had been left on and batteries had gone. But after replacing batteries only managed to successfully turn it on or off about 1 time out of 10 tries. What was really annoying is that quite often other people are able to do so...and other people with the same light saying 'mine works fine'.

Feel much less stupid knowing that someone else has same intermittent fault. Thanks!

Oh does your rack light have a dodgy switch too? It has taken me a while to work out what is actually wrong (I thought it was just temperamental when the batteries started to fade) but I am now sure it is the switch. I am even surer now I know someone else is having the same problem. I am going to see if I can fix it.

@laidback tbc very kindly replaced the dodgy light with one that works!

@liz - I think I'll go for zip ties next time. the light is now very secure, which is good, but gosh what a hassle to get it mounted.

I find zip ties very useful, and have a rather fine, very bright light attached to my rear rack with two of them done up tight...wunderbar. Also saves me having to take it off and fit it on in winter.

Did you / he use the 'rare' Blackburn clips? Been saving some more. You get one with each rack so not a long term solution.

Thanks recombodna whatever means you used...

PS- Thought that light had dodgy switch?

<bad subject line>

Many many thanks to recombodna for much struggling with pclips, drill, vise, irritatingly small screws and bolts (which kept getting dropped into the gravel in the dark), such that I finally have an installed and working rack light on the back of the tandem.

Yay! I have such great neighbours!!
