Smudge, I've inflated mine to something approximating 55±5psi for the running-in. I've still done only 4km so far, which isn't much! I think the key is to really go easy on the acceleration and braking; throwing the bike into a corner feels distinctly dodgy.

I can confirm that Uberuce's ice tyres sound somewhere between rice krispies, an ornamental water feature and being gently on fire.

40km for the Marathon Winters. I did mine last weekend!

Checking them as I took them off, one stud was almost out of its fitting, so I just popped it back in.

Schwalbe says that the spike tyres should be 'run in' for 40km on asphalt to ensure that the spikes are fully bedded in before using them in anger. Forty kilometres! I did about four and that was embarassing enough!

This Schwalbe Ice Spiker and the Marathon Winter on the back of my blue bike are incredibly loud on tarmac. On my trip to the supermarket today everyone I passed looked around in surprise (or horror) to see what was making the awful Rice Krispies noise.

The Ice Spiker wanders a little bit once you reach 16mph or so, but it's no worse than my old Panaracer Duster Pro did.

Just fitted the Marathon Winters on the CX/Tourer/Winter bike this afternoon and took it for a few laps of the local roads to get them bedded in. Temperatures were falling rapidly but it was a beautiful sunset.

The tyres will be coming off until we're once again threatened by ice.

I used the Conti Ice Spikers on the MTB for commuting last year and never had any scary moments. These are A LOT louder though!

What are Gatorskins?

Slicks with a vectran breaker belt, by Continental. Come in a range of flavours (Gatorksin Ultra, Gatorskin Hardshell). Fairly lightweight and aimed at people doing commuting or winter training or other long-distance, on-road cycling on skinny-ish tyres. They are fairly ubiquitous as winter tyres with road cyclists.

"Am I taking my life in my hands with the Gatorskins?"

Probably depends more on the ice than the tyres.

Smooth sheet ice will do for most studless rubber.

Some icyness esp. crushed snow (not the polished by over-revved cars version) can be reasonably grippy (it's all relative).

Paradoxically thin high pressure tyres can be better on thin layers of ice on tarmac.

Smooth riding in a straight line without leaning helps, but...

But black ice on a sharp bend in the early hours before the gritters are out, hard to beat.

Perhaps you need a person with a red flag and a bucket of grit in front of you.

I went along the Innocent at about 9 and there was no proper ice but still a very thick frost. This morning was the first time it's been so cold in the morning that I could see my breath. Clearly neither me nor the bike liked it - my commute to work usually takes less than 15 minutes but it was over 18 today.
