though really I think I just need to hit on the spot on axle size

I have this issue with a Raleigh Twenty frame. I have the original (cottered) axle and one cup, but needed to source a left side 26tpi cup and was trying to convert to cotterless axle: still haven't found quite the right size for the oversized shell yet.....may resort to driving the drive side cup further into the shell (about 3mm) so I can fit an axle for 73mm shell in there. Or else bodging a cheap modern 24tpi plastic case BB in there - which apparently works by mashing the plastic threads a bit leaving the steel undamaged, but how to remove if required?

Plenty of 'vintage' axles kicking around on fleaBay. This guy sometimes has useful old bike parts. There is a specialist retailer in old bike parts down South (lots of old Sturmey Archer stuff) but I can't recall the name...

Sadly I don't know. The guy I got it from was only the second owner and the decals were worn to illegibility. I think it's a Low-Built, but not sure.

@laidback. thanks for link. missed it though - and then ended up flipping between frozen planet and a friend's documentary about Hudson's Bay boys. (next time I wear my Hudson's Bay coat everyone'll know what it is!).

"Can you not just use old BSA parts? Presumably the right threading, etc."

Nope. Seems there's a lot of 'bespoke' stuff by bike manufacturers at that time, no standardised way of doing things. The BB is further complicated by the chaincase being fully enclosed (for an oil bath) and forms the actual chainstay, which is removable - so the shell has bits for the chaincase to attach to which changes the dimensions of things (though really I think I just need to hit on the spot on axle size (have you seen how many different axle widths and lengths and forms there are for vintage bikes????) and use loose bearings...

Every now and then. Had to occasionally take the approach if just buying to try - got some nice vintage stuff to sell on!

There really doesn't seem to be a Sunbeam owners club. Not that I've found yet. Maybe I should start one then farm the members for parts.

That sounds wrong.

Very wrong.

Not really getting anywhere with sourcing the replacement parts (bottom bracket and headset) for my 30s Sunbeam, and figure the best way to go about it would be to source a dilapidated similar example. Even if I can't harvest the parts I can at least get the bang on sizes and maybe even see about getting something machined up.

So. Anyone sees anything sold as a 30s/40s ish Sunbeam - gimme a shout!
