"After 18:30, on weekdays, only if there's a bike already in the box (that you can't squeeze up beside), if I've no fare in the back."

I don't know which version of StandsToReasonDunnitLogic taxi drivers are running at the moment but I'd've expected them to come up with something like "because cyclists can use bus lanes, which proper taxis can also use, taxis can therefore use cycle facilities" or only recognising them when they couldn't progress further than the first stop line due to cyclists occupying the space between the stop lines before bringing time restrictions into it. The same LRT driver who physically threatened me for pointing out that he'd entered an ASZ years ago initially bleated that there hadn't been a cyclist in it when he'd entered it. Perhaps if it had been raining he'd have tried claiming that ASZs don't operate when it's raining.

As worrying as this is, it is interesting in that it seems to confirm what many of us have been thinking - that some drivers seems to think stopping in the bike box is OK for whatever reason.

('After 6.30' is not a reason I would have guessed at, but never mind).

Perhaps this is a positive thing as it could be fixed through education.

Or am I just naively optimistic?

Heading west into intersection with Viewforth. Taxi comes up behind me, slowing down as light is red. I think he'll do the usual taxi thing and stop with 2 wheels over the stop line. NO, he pulls entirely into the ASL. I carry on up the bike lane and look at him and mouth 'you missed your stop line'. He looks puzzled, rolls down his window, then gets out of car. I repeat, 'you missed your stop line back there' (pointing). No, he says, that's not a stop line. The stop line's up there (pointing). No, I say, that's a stop line. You see, there's not one in the bike lane. The one up there is an advanced stop line. He tries another tack 'its after 6.30, that doesn't apply after 6.30'. I laugh, and suggest he consult the Highway code. 'Its nothing to do with 6.30'. Taxi driver: "I'm a road registered driving instructor". I laugh a bit more and tell him to look it up. He gets back in cab, light changes, sweeps past me.

Wish I'd thought of something clever/funny to say.
