Edit: Yup, perfect turbo trainer music.

I've been to Groove Tunnel, to pick up a daughter from a recording session/children's party. I liked the guitars hanging in the reception area and the CD that resulted from the session went straight to number one*.

@arrelcat @kaputnik @amir @Jackson Priest Thanks for the suggestions. I will listen to them. And yes, Amir, this is mainly music for the turbo. I can imagine "Sweet Child in Time" being ideal for a hard/easy turbo session though I always get hung up on who the best singer was with Deep Purple.

Weird how Eno keeps cropping up.

Dig through iTunes' radio selections for RadioIO Progressive Rock and you'll likely hear stuff from Amon Düül II, Kraftwerk, Neu!, Be Bop Deluxe, National Health, King Crimson, Baker Gurvitz Army, Blodwyn Pig, Brian Eno, Quicksilver Messenger Service and so on. You even get the odd bit of Rush, Yes and Starcastle.

How about a bit of Electric Skychurch, peeps?

More on-topically, I've been to Groove Tunnel a few times for rehearsals. It's the strangest place, along a dirt road just east of Straiton Pond, and past rusting skips and oil drums, but it's decent inside.

@Tom

For direct progression from Neu! you can follow the 2 key people in it into their respective later works.

Michael Roether was the multi-instrumentalist/producer and went on to form Harmonia. He worked with Eno on this so it has a less sparse, more sort of dreamy/ ambient sound, but still with hints of the Motorik beat.

And talking of Motorik apparently invented by Klaus Dinger specifically for Neu!. He went on to La Dusseldorf with his brother and carried with it the his signature drumming sound (La Dusseldorf or Viva albums. Not heard the 3rd, but I think it went a bit sort of german-folk pop. It certainyl has oompahs in the track that I have heard).

Others on the "krautrock" usual suspect lists would be Cluster, Amon Duul II, Tangerine Dream. I'm less familiar with them but have albums somewhere I've ye to give a proper listening.

I used to like Kraftwerk type of music when I was a student but then moved onto heavier material.

Hawkwind might be also be quite good cycling music, quite hypnotic. Trouble it is so psychodelic that you might easily fall off your bike even if it is on a turbo trainer. For interval training you also need a mix of beat speeds - I reckon Deep Purple should do it.

Neu! Is a world of awesome. Anth, there's a recording studio just down the street from me, called 'Great junction street studios, gjss' lots of crap looking indie bands seem to be always emerging from it, so it can't be too expensive.

@ Arellcat I started with Neu! 2. I think because someone at the time told me that was the best one. I think it's fantastic but for some reason never got round to getting any of the others.

@Tom/Kaputnik: early Can is most definitely worth checking out, before they started getting more 'musicianly' (think they were all classically trained musicians slumming it mind) and yes, probably a bit progressive. Avoid anything after Flowmotion - in fact avoid Flowmotion also. Monster Movie, Can Soundtracks and Delay 1968 (comp of unreleased stuff) all great. 20 min long You Doo Right prob my favourite track ever. Will do compilation tape for christmas meet-up if you like???

We did a night in London once called 'Floor Clearers'. Played Cassetto off Neu! 2 / Funkadelic's Eulogy And Light / Metal Machine Music Part 3 / Sometimes It Snows In April - that kind of thing. The concept failed though, cos some people danced. Always quite fancied rolling it out in Edinburgh, it's sure to be a success.

I may defer to those with greater familiarity, but I believe that's a somewhat circular question. Doesn't one start with Neu! and then explore Neu! 2?

I once saw Tangerine Dream; as the NME put it: "three simple musicians plying their trade in the semi-dark". They were a bit boring. What's a good Neu! album to start with?

@Jackson Priest Nice one.

@kaputnik Saw Delight came out when I was in my teens and I can't say I was impressed. I liked Hunters and Collectors and Old Mother Upduff but I filed them under seriously weird. I had another listen when I read people saying how great the earlier stuff is. Future Days is one of my favourite albums.

For the record, to those that sniff "in his day" or "bit too old for you" in my direction - I quite like Can :) but the guitar parts are verging on too psychedelic / progressive for my tastes. Much prefer the cleaner, simpler sounds the like of Neu! German motorik rock is great for cycling to if you want to keep a steady cadence up!

Someone's done some pretty good video compilations for Can songs on Youtube (that I can no longer find). The Mother Sky one is particularly good.

It would be much cheaper to do it on your home Mac or PC. Mac is easier, as recombodna says, use Garageband. If you have a PC there's a great suite of recording tools for free from Dyne:bolic which is a bootable CD version of Linux with sound editing tools and more. Not as user-friendly as a Mac though...

Rat Scabies, eh? I saw the Damned live in the 1980s: Captain Sensible had already left and they were a pale shadow of themselves (appropriately enough)...
