When we lived in East Angular (yes I know) the local neonatal unit had passes to give to new fathers waiting for deliveries. On production of the pass the parking was reduced to the min cost.

This wasn't needed though as they had a plastic barrier and people would just walk up and rip it off its hanger. Then weeks would pass before it was replaced, when it would be ripped off again by some irrate 'customer'....

My only experience of hospital parking charges was at St Johns. After paying £1 twice a day for >8 months of the year for 3 years, it gets annoyingly expensive (even if you buy the £10 weekly saver ticket thingmy).

The other annoyance was the Ques it created when visiting was finished, used to take 20 minutes to get out of that car park in the evening. Before, and after the charges you drive in find a space, then drive out after visiting without waiting 20 minutes.

Personally, much better off without them!

The parking at the ERI isn't that expensive until you need to go to and from a few times in a day or have spent the entire day waiting on a delivery.

"They could easily do the same thing at hospitals - tickets and barriers, but the hospital validate the ticket for you after confirming your appt, so for patients it's free."

I don't know if all components of the Infirmary offer this, but when I had to drive rather than bike to the New Simpson to pick up the boy when he was released someone in neonatal gave us a wee ticket we could have allegedly somehow used to not have to pay for the parking, but it was only £1.50 or so for a couple of hours in the afternoon so I didn't bother.

Hmm, perhaps they could organise some sort of parking ticket validation, like Fountainbridge. Park at a cost but have the cost removed on receipt of a plastacast or impressive looking scar. Plasters over wee cuts reduce the tarif by 25% for example.

That's not a product of the cost of parking but of the implementation of the scheme, though.

Every time I go to Fountainbridge I park for free, because the cinema validate your ticket for you. However if you park there to jump on the bus, you have to pay on leaving.

They could easily do the same thing at hospitals - tickets and barriers, but the hospital validate the ticket for you after confirming your appt, so for patients it's free.

I think this is hilarious. My other half works for the NHS and has had dealing with various of the parking things. When the Sturgeon announced parking would be free it was a lovely political gesture, which also completely ignored the fact that they couldn't make such an offer for PFI hospitals, without massive payments to be made to the car park operators.

And then, guess what, those that are made free have become free-for-alls (literally) and anyone working nearby, or near a bus route, is parking there.

Can we mention this the next time someone like Octane Heid goes on about parking charges for the NRIE?
