That's some rig!

Either this guy works in a bar, or he waited for months, saving up his recycling, until the snow fell, just so he could get this photo taken and show off to everyone.

Yesterday afternoon, the Met Office upgraded its warnings from yellow (“be aware”) to amber advising people to “be prepared” for heavy snow in Lothian and Borders, south-west Scotland, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside and Fife.

Yep, they're all studs from the central pairs that I've lost. I figure that if I replace any that weren't properly seated, pretty soon I should wind up with a tyre full of well-seated studs.

It may also be the specific model of tyre. I have Schwalbe Snow Studs, which have relatively few studs, and they are on the outer edges of the tread. They were all I could find when the blizzards hit last November. Marathon Winters have twice as many studs, some more central in the tread and perhaps more likely to pop out. The real champion stud encrusted tyres are Schwalbe Ice Spikers, I can imagine they'd be very noisy on the road!

I didn't keep a proper running count, but it seems to me( and I think Smudge noticed it too) that all the studs you're going to lose pop out in the first couple of days and from then one you're pretty set.

I didn't lose any from going round Arthur's Seat on them*, for example, but I'd lost five in the proscribed 40km of very gentle and cautious pootling around.

*not that I was capable of any great speed either up or down, but I guess in terms of torque the uphill would have been a reasonable stress test.

I don't know why you folks are having issues with studs coming out. I bought my Snow Stud tyres last year, rode them straight away on icy roads. I've had no issues with missing studs. Maybe I'm a more cautious, less aggressive rider than you lot? Or maybe I was just lucky with a pair of tyres that didn't pop studs over the road.

For some reason I expected it to be much noisier on tarmac than it is. I don't really notice unless I pay attention.

Coming off the Roseburn down that steep hill with the trailer on, I was quite happy even though I still had a slick on the back. I can't imagine being able to ride *up* again, mind you!

The nice thing I hadn't realised is that even when they skid, they don't shoot off like a normal tyre. It's just like the braking gets a bit slower (I guess it never truly slides while the studs are tearing into the surface).

I did grab a pair of studded tyres from the Bike Chain in the end, and was amazed at how nifty they were riding up the Roseburn (especially as I started on 35mm slicks and changed halfway under a bridge). It really is like riding without snow when you get them on :)

Now, we just need a harsh winter...

We had a few drinks in South Queensferry last night and on the return over the bridge we saw them spraying the road surface of the bridge. They must use alcohol as I guess salt would corrode the metal. We commented that it was not cold enought to freeze but when we got up It had laid here in Fife. Its starting to melt now but it does look lovely out there.

I was glad of the snow tyres this morning. Hooked the tagalong on as normal, just took it gently along to Portobello. Made sure No.1 son had wellies and waterproofs on, though his crud catcher kept most of the spray off him. Main roads largely clear though some slushy snow at edges, especially in the cycle lanes. Prom almost deserted and covered in melting snow. "Look, a snow beach!" exclaimed No.1 son. Majority of roads completely clear by 1pm due to rising temperatures, salt and traffic.

Oh yeah, wore my polystyrene hat thingy for the first time since January.

First task was to clear pavement at the showroom. Got salt too.

Had call from someone coming up through Alnwick - think roads are ok.

Winter tyres. With drums or disks then teh answer must be a mini snow tread thing that can be removed quickly?

I tried zip ties last year on back of trike (not used for braking). They survived about a week - long enough really.
