Ahh.. the old how to visit a hospital with a free car-park technique.

It's amazing how it's always easier to keep driving than find any other alternative. Is it cheaper - who cares?
"The planners, government, other people made me do it and we'll keep driving till they get the message."

I missed the hospital car park debate but it's a great illustration of how a failure to charge for something actually costs a lot more money and causes distress. SG thought it would look good to reduce costs to motorists and it did play well for about a week. The equivalent would be to let people have free phone calls and internet and then act surprised when the system overloaded. Sure there are other analogies.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16153541

Top comments are pretty much all about how expensive/difficult it is to park in town.

e.g.

"The car parking charges in Nottingham keep us away from the City Centre during the week, thus, if we decide to go shopping / eat out in the week we take a 30 minute drive to an out of town shopping centre and park for free"

and

"We find it hard to park near our local town centre, so much so that when my wife needs to deposit cheques at the bank I drop her outside, then circle on the one-way system until she emerges... "

SG were talking about taxing the out of town supermarkets but they need all the money they can get and seemed to successfully argue against it. (+ free parking 'can't be beat' - unless it's at hospital of course)
Some were also against min alcohol pricing as that would increase profits for Tesco et al.
So both policies should be implemented and everyone will be happy?
