@Chug I assume that it was the contractors who've moved the fence back off the path since yesterday afternoon when it was literally one-way beyond the metal chicane. They seemed to have done this so that they were able to dig up the ground right up to the edge of the towpath. This morning there were supports in place, protruding back into the dug out area, on which the fencing stood.

I agree that this fence is making the towpath almost one-way-at-a-time. The fence has flexed on and off the path over the last few days. Someone is moving it. I'm genuinely not sure whether it's the contractors or a towpath user.

Just wait for the school to open, then we'll see how narrow the path really is!

The fencing by the towpath at the Boroughmuir High School site has been moved even further onto the path towards the metal chicane/cut through area now that work is presumably about to begin on the new 'park' area at that part of the site. I'm glad that I was leaving work early today so that it wasn't too busy when negotiating that section, although tomorrow morning is likely to be a complete nightmare...

Not sure why they didn't complete the work at the time, especially given that traffic on the towpath was quite light during the Easter holidays, but they closed off the Gray's Loan bridge for towpath users on Tuesday and it remains shut. Due to a diversion to Morningside on Tuesday/Wednesday I only experienced this properly this morning and was unimpressed by the complete lack of provision for pedestrians and cyclists now having to cross Gray's Loan, which was very busy with traffic.

The upgrade work is kind of curious - I'm not sure what was wrong with the existing surface. I wondered if they were going to tarmac the recently double-yellow-lined muddy and bumpy connection to Ogilvie Terrace.

The wide section of canal towpath between the bridges at Harrison Park has been abruptly 'upgraded' today, which means that it is now covered in a layer of tiny bits of gravel that are not at all conducive to cycling over... Hopefully the loose bits will be swiftly cleared away.

Perhaps, but -

CEC says -

"The surfacing at Ratho is a localised project to tackle the very bad drainage issue in the cutting. We're contributing some funding along with Sustrans - I think the length is about 500m."

smooth tarmac all the way to Falkirk would indeed be lovely, they could then widen it to a three laner, two lanes for bikes going east and west and another for pedestrians, oh and add movement sensing traffic lights at the bridges/narrow sections.. and then you'd have a real "cycling superhighway".
And then I woke up :-/

I was down the WoL yesterday and there is some sort of energy-sucking new surfcae in place from Splash in Juniper Green all the way to the bridge in Colinton. Very soft, gray and smooth but already full of tyre tracks being cut into the loose wet surface.

Path through Harrison park should be good as especially just now its not nice walking the bike through. I just hope it doesn't become a poo magnet like some parts of the canal. Any idea on how long it takes jobs like that to be completed in Edinburgh?

very small speed bumps have been inserted at Cutlins Road - sort of before a bridge ? if heading west. The torrential rain caused a few puddles but nothing like before, a man footering with Greenroofer's sign at Gogar Station Road told me the contractor is in Ratho (will check today) and presumably heading in towards Hermiston. Looks like the May Day jaunt to Falkirk will be paved to Ratho.

There were nice pics of the Soliton Wave recreation at Heriot-Watt
I look forward to trying the new tarmac at Lochrin on foot and on two wheels
@chdot that pic is nothing new - I reckon dog walkers need to keep their dogs on a lead at all time unless in a large open space like... Harrison Park. Given that is where I live I used the canal daily to go to the Gyle (I think I already mentioned) and before that into town as I worked on Viewforth prior to that.
Speeding along is a bad idea especially at the blind bridges, it was at the one near the mini Tesco on Colinton Rd (Meggetland) where I had my head on collision with idiot boy on a bike who didn't ring his bell when he was approaching from the other side.

I did not know about theSoliton fibre optic cable linking Glasgow and Edinburgh beneath the towpath, I will tread with care. Thanks Chris, also I love the dogs/peds/bikes pic near Harrison Gdns? on Canal.

The Spurtle - free newspaper of the Broughton area heralded the wee tunnel at Tescos in Cannonmills (A lovely wee tunnel) as the completion of route 75 and an event which at long last linked Glaswegians with sunshine and civilisation. Coming from the West I thought this was very funny.
