Eastcoast has now started a 'rewards' scheme. Not sure what I think of that, but I do wish they'd given me credit for the first class ticket to London a couple of weeks ago!

Oh aye - 4 of us got the train down to Berwick a couple of weeks ago for the cycle back. Tons of room in a proper "guards van" section up front with racks for 5 bikes and the driver told us they'll usually squeeze in anyone else too.

£8 each one-way seemed a decent price too.

As someone who makes fairly regular trips across the delights of the national rail network, often with the bike in tow, I'd heartily recommend the East Coast site for all bookings regardles of the operator. It's the only site (other than I think southern's) where you can reserve a bike space online, it doesn't have a booking fee (unlike thetrainline...), gets exactly the same deals as any other site, plus an additional discount on the advance East Coast tickets. Can be a little heavy on a slow connection mind.

Their trains are also pretty bike friendly as the engine bit has a cargo space in it. And their first class trolley folk keep you well supplied with free tea and biscuits even if you do smell like a wet dog.

Hmmm. I could go and visit my sister or something. Possibly worth first testing the bairn on a shorter train journey before hitting him with the full 5+ hours to London.

Other half is off to London for work and was seconds away from booking through another site (trainline I think) when I suggested checking the East Coast site.

Delighted to discover cheap tickets on offer, so much so that I'm going to take a few days off work and go down too. 1st class!

Bum! I just paid £33 each way (2 singles) for a return to London 6-8th January. Wasn't available when I bought them on Monday.

Rail ticket pricing seems less about what the journey actually "costs" than a few headline grabbing "cannot miss this deal" while the actual standard / overall average ticket prices increase.

I actually thought £66 return for a weekend was pretty good. Much cheaper than flying and can take my bike right into centre of the Smoke.

EDIT - just noticed this is for Monday through Thursday travel only...
