@klaxon, their coffee is good. Have tried to persuade folk to go there instead of Costa but some feel the coffee is not hot enough. Philistinism. and the luncheon dishes are very tasty and good value. The donuts are exceptional if somewhat pricey.

I'm quite enjoying the new cut-through at the Caltongate (or whatever it's called now) development at the east end of Market Street.

Not the cyclist-only on-road bit on New Street, though that is actually working pretty well. I'm referring to the new pedestrianised courtyard/plaza paved are opposite the end of Market Street. Makes a brilliant cut-through: just cycle to the big arch, dismount and cross on the spiffing new zebra crossing, then the smaller arch opposite gives access to St John Street, and thence to Holyrood Road and beyond. I'm finding it a very agreeable way to get to/from city centre, Royal Mile, southside, and Abbeyhill (via Holyrood Park).

Quite scuzzy bit of the Royal mile. The sailor's ark. The jumper factory (closed for many years). The canon gate ventchie also closed for many years. The premier inn looks to be getting three pyramids of a miniature nature on the roof of its function suite, the little shops in the cellars under Jeffrey street looking good.

So I weigh up the developments / improvements against world heritage. And I still err on the side with development. Sorry if that sounds utilitarian or crass.

The developers behind the Caltongate scheme, now rebranded as New Waverley after the site was bought up by a South African real estate consortium, were criticised for failing to respect the “mythology” of the Old Town and the significance of historic buildings, saying that simply preserving their facades was “totally inappropriate” for a world heritage site.

according to Naomi the woman in the sweetie shop (not hugely reliable narrator but good stories and treeeemendous sweeties - rhubarb rock and now coulters candy - which is just hard treacle toffee but delicious) the rats left the hangar in droves two nights back, also claims some squirrels ran into Waverley Court . The hangar was across the road from waverly court before the Ventchie but the hangar is going, going gone quite quickly in the last two days.

My wife calls Holyrood Road Back Canongate but I don't see why, since I've never heard anyone else use that name, it couldn't be transferred to the other side of the Canongate.

Why not celebrate Hogg's antihero Robert Wringhim and call the area Gilmartin Gate.

Preparatory work has been going on for months...

New Waverley is a silly name.

Caltongate was OK, as it was a portmanteau of the 2 roads which define the N and S boundary. I guess it became discredited.

The old name of this area was North Back of Canongate, or just "North Back".

The house, which, by legend, is said to have been built from stone from every part of Scotland, will fall to a lament. Mr Patrick Murray, curator of the Museum of Childhood, told "The Scotsman" that he regarded it as a test case in the fight to preserve the more recent historic buildings.
" We have thrown away the buildings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries," he said " Younger people will look for Victorian buildings to preserve." Mr Murray said that America was more conscious of the need to preserve her Victorian landmarks than was Britain. He suggested that in Edinburgh town councillors and younger members of the learned professions should co-operate to try to form an organisation which would decide on buildings which should be preserved, and also attempt to find organisations willing to take them over.

The vaults which are part of this development of the derelict site are having a pop up festival maybe this week or next week? They stretch under Jeffrey st from east market st. Bike station still seem to have bikes in a couple of them from time to time.

Council is desperate for cash and rejuvenation so selling this site for a few jobs in shops and a hotel to a South African company who will be the ones making the money still seems attractive in a way that it would not have done previously?

"

One has no great hopes of the wisdom of any urban planning department, but of all the hare-brained decisions, Edinburgh City Council’s vote to press the green light on the development of a long-vacant five-acre site in North Canongate, between the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace and Calton Hill, must rank among the most lazy, craven and myopic I have ever encountered.

...

Edinburgh, one can only conclude, is at risk of losing not only its dignity but its soul.

I'd read it a few days ago. thought it was definitely better than the last piece, but that's not saying much
