@MGJ, I'd love to see them succeed as well, and I appreciate some of the costs/difficulties in an enterprise like that. I just worry that they're pricing themselves out of the market before they've started. :-/ I'll be delighted to be proven wrong though. Would be great if they can make a go-er of it.

@Kaputnik, you're not helping my efforts towards self restraint and economy ;-))

Combo Shimano Tiagra-Sora-105 (Tiagora05) componentry all works perfectly on the Dawes. The newer ones even have luxury of threadless steerer / aheadset.

Know him through a friend and he's a lovely guy, and hoping he can make a proper living from this now rather than having to fit it around IT contracting IIRC. Sadly I dont think I'll ever wear out my Marin frame (now there's a challenge).

Or eBay random bargains! My Audax 531 "super competition" frame was ex-display 1997 vintage and £200 including headset and a nice pair of 3TTT ergonomic bar / stem combo. I admit I had been pricing up Bob Jackson / Dave Yates type steel "clubman" frames when it popped up and I decided IT MUST BE MINE.

I actually made an eBay miscalculation and lost the auction, however man who won it got in touch when it arrived and said he thought he was getting a heavy touring bike and did I still want it. He lived not far from me so I was happy to swap my £200 for his unwanted frame.

I've seen it said that Thorn frames are made in Tiawan, my understanding (as per the link) is that Bob Jackson and Mercian both make their frames in house. There are some other small operations down south I understand doing similar (though no doubt the two relatively big names mentioned enjoy some economies of scale).
With the best will in the world I think personally I couldn't ever justify upwards of £1k on an off the shelf steel frame, I'd have to think very long and hard (even if I could afford it!) even on a custom steel frame when the opposition is established gets good reviews and is half the price :-/

According to this, the 'production frame' will be £1100-£1300 for frame and forks, depending on the model:

http://www.shandcycles.com/2011/11/11/production-frame-update/

A bit pricey<strike>, but then the Bob Jackson frames are (I believe) made in Taiwan</strike>. I presume the Mercian non-custom frames are built in England, and it seems the Bob Jackson ones are too.

Getting back on topic for a moment (I know, sorry!) the frames look loveley, and I like the local aspect, but I've seen elsewhere online a price of "from £1200" for a steel custom build.
Whilst a custom build will always be more expensive, are the off the peg ones going to be able to compete with the likes of Bob Jackson (£465 for am audax club frame and forks, which I have to confess I'm *very* tempted by! http://www.bobjacksoncycles.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=45 )
Or indeed a Mercian http://www.merciancycles.co.uk/frames/25/audax-special )
Of course those on a tighter budget could pick up a Surly pacer frameset for around £350 iirc, there are even carbon framesets appearing in the back of the glossies a chunk under £1k, now I know that they (the carbon cheapies) wont be best quality, but it's a competitive market, and the Shand off the peg frames need to be affordable as well as good to break in imho.

All that said, I'd be *delighted* if they were to start producing a direct equivalent to the Bob Jackson/Mercian, but Scottish :)

@Kaputnik, Good Lor' no! If there were no job too big or small for the LHT, then I wouldn't need my MTB, Roady bike or folder would I... no no, that way madness (and severe curtailment of the fleet) lies ;-)

No trailers required, it already can have large & small ortliebs, large bar bag and carradice on it as well as space on the rack for more odds and ends, if more gear that that has to be dragged up the hill to home then I'm afraid one of the motorised vehicles will be pressed into service.
Much as I love the bicycle, I'm too often riding on unlit country roads in company of ar.... erm, "ne'er do wells" in cars to risk towing a young 'un in a trailer round here :-/

There is that. Be prepared for your cycling budget to take a hit! Mind you, one can acceptably divert funds towards sprog carrying equipment for bicycles.

interesting, and not far from home either... I could be very interested in a roady/audaxy type frameset for my OCR to morph into, assuming the coming smudgeling doesn't absorb all spare cash for the next 20 years :-/
Have done the survey and volunteered to road test just in case anyway :-)
