I think a camera is probably one of the most valuable things you can have, although I simultanously hate it for its negativity (a bit like seatbelts, it's only genuinely useful if it all goes horribly wrong).

Sometimes I go for months without anything interesting happening, at which point I invariably go bare-headed and someone tries to run me over ;-)

Like Anth, I strongly suspect that having a camera is at least as useful for the perspective / moderation that it brings to your riding as for the 'accident insurance' or third party value.

In a way I think it's funny that people find it funny. I can understand not wanting to spend money on a camera or not wanting to bother having one on your person, but for people who aren't fussed about the logistics, why would you *not* have a camera?

It is very useful when you want to give the rest of us a good laugh. Just have it running as you fall off your bike half way through your commute. Not anyone here would do that ;-)

Well I bought a Muvi.

Really impressed with ease of use/image quality.

Am mostly using it to record various bits of cycle infrastructure - some at nepn.info.

It's fixed to handlebars rather than head as this 'keeps looking forward' - though obviously also picks up road bumps. Suspension, and moderately careful riding, reduces that to some extent.

The "extra kit" is of less value.

I suppose something with the 'smallth' of the Muvi means you can more or less keep it with you at all times without worrying about the bulk. The ATC2k camera that Anth and I both used was a benchmark for its time but was still a lump, especially if attached to a helmet, Sheldon Brown-style.

Thing is, I'm not sure it was the bulk of the ATC that led to me not using it every day on my commute. Perhaps riding the bike I do means I don't always take (or have) the filtering opportunities that a regular bike would afford, so when I ride I'm a bit more chilled out and ready to react. Actually, now that I've written that, I think it's a fallacy. Nothing much happens on my commute enough times that I just lost the habit of bunging the camera on the bike.

How is the sound quality, Anth? The ATC suffers terribly from wind noise if you remove the rubber seal to pick up speech, but with the seal it becomes muffled beyond belief.

I'm amused that idea of commuting with the Muvi could be considered an 'extreme' activity. :-)

There are a number of reasons really. Part of it is a security measure in case anything happens.

And I've actually found it brings a bit of 'zen' to my riding. If I get cut up or whatever I know I've got it on camera, so there's no real need to engage the driver (or cyclist!). I'll make it known I'm not happy, but there's no need to go further.

And I run an online cycling magazine, so it's always handy having video footage to do things with (cehck out http://www.citycycling.co.uk and click on the 'movies' link on the left hand side).

Without a doubt the best value camera you can get. Even Amazon are now selling it for £54 (or at least they were at the start of the week).

I've been commuting with one for a little over a month or so now and it's not missed anything. Good wide angle on it, and the microphone isn't bad.

Annoying that for a head mount you've got to buy an extra 'extreme' kit, but there you go...

If so what about the extra kit for fitting to handlebar/helmet?
