I think it is based on numbers of the product sold as well as their stock market share prices, and bicycles are just not in that sort of league, and is all a bit niche. I think Porche and MB sell more of their cars than any bike manufacturer sells in this automotive, alcohol, fashion, food, electronics, gizmo driven world.

As a "brand", based on image and how seriously they take themselves and that sort of thign (rather than just end product) things like Campagnolo jump to mind. And of course Rapha.

Brompton surely has to be there in the top cycling brands. It has brand recognition even amongst the non-cycling masses. Staying with British brands, Dawes still has a reputation to be proud of.

What about Sturmey Archer? ( I suppose see Raleigh above for historical kudos).

Dahon ought to be a contender, despite it's awkward name.

1. Raleigh (for what it has done, not where it is now!)
2. ...

The interesting (?) thing about a lot of those "top brands" is they use the brand image to sell you something that you don't need and won't make your life any better and may even make it worse! I guess that's what branding consultants are paid for!

Also there are no privately held companies in that list, and I think a lot of it is basically what their "value" on the stock market is. For instance, do they mean Coca Cola the drink, or the Coca Cola Corporation, which has many, many brands - a lot of which people don't associate with the company.

So if it were a bicycle specific top 100 who'd be in the top 10.

wingpig suggests Shimano (above). I'd have thought Trek, Cannondale, Specialized, Giant?

Folk on Yahoo Answers (US specific) seem to suggest Schwinn - er, should I have heard of them?

The Armani one is (of course) rather overpriced for what you get. It's basically a re-badged Electra cruiser. A similar spec without Armani branding is about a third of the price. But then I suppose a similar spec suit or turtle neck sweater without that branding.....blimey, next I'll be saying buy a cheap PC instead of an Apple computer.*

* No way! The immortal Jobs reality distortion field lives on. Macintosh forever!

In the same way that Intel are above Dell you'd almost expect Shimano or one of those other multi-component-producing brands to be far above any specific frame-compiler.

On a similar off-topic, does anyone remember that infographic from last year which essentially showed that Copenhagen was the Copenhagiest Copenhagen?

and expensive

So long as your non-cycle-specific clothes cost more than your bike, that is fine by the cyclechic manifesto. I presume Mr Copenhagenize has an €1,801 coat to justify his €1,800 Bullitt cargo bike...

The Armani bike looks a bit more practical, dare I say Citizen Cyclist ® than the Beamer, which just looks a bit silly and expensive.
