Lucky you weren't on a treadmill. Hopefully automatic shut-downs on those are done with sufficient warning to stop people running into the control bar.

I'm very proud of my heart, as it's a very good one. My parents must have paid extra for it.

When I'm working out regularly, my resting heart rate is 48-50. I took it just now, after three cups of coffee and reading about some new idiocy my country's government is involved in, and it's 60.

But what's really cool about my heart is my MHR. I found out, quite by accident, that my MHR is around 190, and I'm in my mid-50s.

I say discovered by accident, because I discovered at the same time that hotel exercise equipment has automatic shutdown capabilities. I was at a conference, and on a stationary bicycle with the whole heart rate monitor/METS thingy. I punch in my age and weight, and get started.

Midway through the workout, I start doing a sprint, and then all hell broke loose! My heart rate increased to what the computer interpreted as the DANGER ZONE for my age. It started flashing ALL CAPS WARNING MESSAGES!!!STOP!!! at me, which I duly ignored and pressed on. My HR went up a few more beats and the whole damn thing just shut down, which I thought was kind of a crap move, because I didn't really understand why.

I ended up getting a heart rate monitor, just for giggles, and found out that I have the MHR of a 30-year old. It's dropped a few points since, but it's still insanely high.

Kinda cool, but doesn't really get me beers in the bar.

BP holds tight at around 110/70.

It's not the heart that will get me, it will probably be a cancer.

Or, more likely, some schmuck doing the New York Times crossword while spewing his SUV down the road...

The iphone app works with your finger resting against the camera lens. The flash unit is lit and shines into your finger. The camera detects the changes in colour as the amount of blood in the capillaries changes.

Apparently it's the same method used by those big clothes peg things that are put on a patient's finger in hospital.

They use the inbuilt awesomeness that is android, a little rubs off on iPhone. They won't work on WiFone due to the will sapping nature of windows ;).

They apparently detect the colour change in your finger as the blood is pushed through. Pretty clever.
