Also they plant pretty floral beds in the middle of French roundabouts. They are though a British invention, as far as I know. What a great gift to the world UK road designers have given! (Ironic, for the avoidance of doubt).

Oh and the IKEA transportfiets would be pretty feasible, as long as they have good brakes! More or less downhill from Straiton to much of Edinburgh. Empty on the way back, so not such a huge effort uphill. Might need electric assist though, maybe even throttle...

I quite liked French roundabouts based on my limited experience of them. There was something about the signage in the way it had "this exit for" and "keep going round for" posts at every exit which made them easy to use even if the signs on the approach hadn't been clear.

Crikey!

"Half of the world's roundabouts are in France (over 30,000 as of 2008)."

That Wikipedia entry is ridiculously innaccurate. It's got an animated picture with cars going round it, using their indicators. As if that ever happens in the real world... ;)

"??? roundabouts? "

The term "traffic circle" is not used in the United Kingdom, where most circular junctions meet the U.S. technical criteria for roundabouts

...apart from Dundee (AIUI).

There is a shared use pavement, although that has the usual issue of signs planted in the middle of the path (such as to create a dual carriageway for bicycles - clearly a safety feature).

Being a wide load, the transportfiets might need to keep to the road!

"wouldn't this be fun to see at Straiton"

Even more fun to see if going around the traffic circles on the way to/from!

Disappointing - I was hoping that each rider got to steer one wheel, allowing for skilled pairs to utilise the taxi knock-kneed turning thing we learnt about yesterday!
