There is a Go Outdoors in Coatbridge which offers a discount card.

I just had a keek at their web page and it looks like they stock Craghopper pants so I might go and see the real shop.

Just so that we are not accused of parodying American culture too ruthlessly (something I am _never_ guilty of ;)...I notice that no one has responded to my post about the prevalence in US and Canada of membership co-ops from which cycling and other outdoor gear can be purchased, in contrast to the rather more profit-oriented industry over here. We miss REI and Mountain Equip Coop a lot!

They also do good lines in ethical clothing, and excellent kids winter-coats that are actually waterproof, kids boots that have linings and stuff like that. Not necessarily cheap (although the £ goes a long way), but durable, and the sales can be brilliant.

Being a 'merkin, I can intelligibly propound on this subject. As in Scotland, various luminaries are constantly propounding guidelines, goals and multi-faceted objectives without anyone going to the bother of actually taking them seriously.

The day that pedestrians and cyclists are elevated to equality with automobiles on the road in the U.S.A. will be the day our entire edifice of individual freedom crumbles and falls to the ground like a paper-mache statue of Saddam Hussein.

A proposal for an unexpected source

Treat walking and bicycling as equals with other transportation modes

Ensure convenient access for people of all ages and abilities

Go beyond minimum design standards

Collect data on walking and biking trips

Set a mode share target for walking and bicycling

Protect sidewalks and shared-use paths the same way roadways are protected (for example, snow removal)

Improve nonmotorized facilities during maintenance projects

Sounds like the sort of policies you would get from a liberal neo-socialist European country, but no just look at the spellings (this was cut and pasted) from the official blog of the US Secretary of Transportation.

Can we expect to this sort of thing in a Manifesto landing on our door step any time soon?
