I'm down to ride the 72 miler too. Looking forward to it in a blithely naive kinda way.

Unfortunately I'm also moving house at the moment, which equates to zero riding time right now. In fact I've had to use my lunch-hours at work (plus commutes to and from) as training. Without the long miles in the legs, I'm not sure this is going to be easy...

I'd thoroughly recommend the Bethany. It's a great ride and will be glorious if this weather holds. However, I'm busy that weekend so won't be doing it.

I would be up for that route or something similar (perhaps with a bit more emphasis on cafe stops) should we get much more of this bright yellow disc in the sky stuff.

It is a great route (though I preferred the original through Middleton to the new one along the A7) but I've ridden it twice and it falls on our anniversary. Plus I'm out all day this Saturday. So, for those reasons, I'm out.

Apparently this ride has made it big:

"You will all probably know that we have made it in to the new Harper Collins Book ‘Top 300 of the World’s Greatest Cycle rides and races’! It will be available in September so do look out for it."

They still need many more folk to sign up. The good things about this sportive are:
- really local
- a shorter distance is available for those who want to do a metric ton before an imperial
- really friendly volunteers
- fee is £30 (low fee for a sportive) all going charity
- sportive level support - route signing and refreshment points
- more riders than most audaxes so you should be able to find someone to ride with (if you want)
- wonderful route

"
The Sportive takes place a week on Saturday which is 2nd June. I am contacting you to see if you can help me. The numbers for this year’s Sportive are quite low compared with last year. As a charity we can’t afford to spend money and take out advertising slots but I am really hoping that you will consider helping us to try and promote this event in its final days.

Anything you can do to help us promote this event will be really beneficial to us. Literally every penny raised goes to help homeless people in Scotland. Currently there are about 80,000 who are homeless in Scotland. It costs our charity around £30 to provide a homeless person with a warm safe bed for the night, a hot meal, great advice and breakfast. We therefore charge entry to the Sportive at £30 person. We want to see as many cyclists as we can taking part which each one representing a homeless person and ‘going the extra mile’ for them

"
"
INFO
BETHANY SPORTIVE SATURDAY 2nd JUNE 2012
Now in its fourth year this exciting event for serious amateurs involves a super challenge route of 102 miles. There is also a shorter route of 72 miles on offer for those who would not be able to complete the longer stretch within 8 hours or less. Riders leave from Lasswade High School in Bonnyrigg and head south over the Moorfoot Hills to Innerleithen where the long and shorter routes split. Just before the split there is chance to stop off at the first water station to rehydrate. The long route now takes a spectacularly scenic route around the borders where a water and feed station will be located at Tushielaw before riders take on the formidable climb (and then descent!) of Witchie Knowe! For the shorter route, riders return to Lasswade from Innerleithen via the River Tweed and Gala Water valleys. Both routes meet again just west of Galashiels and head north where another feed and water station awaits loaded with cakes! Riders then return to the High School over the Moorfoot Hills once more where another water station will be on hand to top you up before attempting those rolling hills. Each participant will be individually timed and the finishing times will be published on the Bethany website after the event. Feed and water stations will also be on hand offering the riders refreshments along the way which should stock a variety of snacks, high sugar biscuits and cakes as well as water. We have travelling first aiders, a team of route response vehicles and motorbike outriders. You are in very safe hands. Entries are limited to 400 with an entry fee of £30 per entrant. Please sign up quickly to ensure a space. http://www.entrycentral.com/index.php?festivalID=null&raceID=100741 There are 50 free spaces for riders who can raise over £100 in sponsorship! Please email Hannah BEFORE you sign up through Entry Central if you would like to register for a FREE place: sportive@bethanychristiantrust.com. Alternatively, for more information please get in touch and ask as many questions as you like because we love to hear from you.

We have kept the entry fee at £30 for the fourth year. It costs Bethany around £30 to provide a homeless person with a warm safe bed in our shelter, a hot meal, get advice and a breakfast. With over 80,000 currently homeless in Scotland we have a lot of work to do. Every cyclist represents someone we can help. Please join us for an amazing day with stunning scenery and hopefully you can transform someone’s life forever.

"
Dear Cycling Edinburgh,
My name is Sarah Budd and I am contacting you because I am helping plan Bethany Christian Trust’s 4th annual Sportive. The Sportive is a 102 mile (there is a 72 mile option) bicycle race that helps to raise money for the Bethany Christian Trust. It will take place on June 2, 2012. I am hoping that you will be able to help us advertise. A flyer is attached. If you are able to print it off, could you please place it on your website? If not, please send me your postal address and I will send you flyers. For more information please visit our website at http://www.edinburghsportive.btck.co.uk. Thank you for your help.
