Thanks @cb. It's a shame, it would be a very useful link! Now the fence is up it cuts down on opportunities for getting off the road.

@LivD, sounds like the photo was taken in the same place you are talking about, but to the NE of the path.

As it turned out, I was getting carried away when I saw the works, and assumed it was a new access going in. However chdot asked the council and was told it was just creating access for some drainage works.

But neither of us updated the thread...

(Just edited the photo on Flickr to say as such)

Old thread but the only one that appears relevant. There used to be a desire line from the Roseburn Path down to a vennel between Craigleith Drive and Craigleith View (not the one that involves the hill climb up to Ravelston Dykes and the messy ironmongery). It looks as though someone (council? private landowner?) has fenced off the section in the last couple of years so there is no access now.

I am about to start cycle commuting again (I hope) after 2+ years of small person going to nursery, he will be starting school in the autumn and my ideal route would be to go down Craigleith Drive and then up onto the NEPN just by the bridge. But if I can't, it's a bit of a slog up the hill to the Holiday Inn then down steps, or retrace my route and go down the Ravelston Dykes Ramp.

It seems a shame to have restricted access to the NEPN rather than improved it.

(I can't actually visualise where the photo at the top was taken - maybe it turned out not to be a path but some other works).

Russell road was handy and a proper end to the path. All other exits and entrances stop before the end. No big deal compared with the whole path returning to tram/rail. Same with threat down trinity. But first the first line needs to get finished.

Anyone know what the Russell Road end of the Roseburn path will look like once the works are complete?

As far as I know, the plan for Russell Road is still as originally drawn; more details here:

http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=470#post-4204

with the 30MB schematic from:

http://citydev-portal.edinburgh.gov.uk/portal/getEdmDoc?docid=55379286&ext=pdf

I was wondering if chdot or kaputnik were doing something like investigating the possibility of a new access to the west side of the path at Murrayfield station.

I know kaputnik has photographically investigated the old flight of steps to Murrayfield station, and I've poked about at the top as well, without my camera. The undergrowth is very thick but the steps are still there.

I'm equally confident that trams will never run on the Roseburn corridor.

UNLESS either Scottish Government or Waterfront developers pay.

Both seem unlikely.

IF there is ever 'any money' I think ERI + (perhaps) QMU would be next.

Council knows all about the badgers and (somehow) thinks it will avoid disturbing them. But then it thinks there's room for an 'adequate' path at the side of the tracks.

"to make way for the tram line which WILL go down there in the future!!!!"

The Roseburn will definitely go in exchange for a tram line. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the next bit of track they built (even before going down Leith Walk).

Unfortunately, it's a total no-brainer to run a tram line down a disused railway bed. There will be no utilities to move, no need to worry about roadworks upsetting motorists / the Evening News, it will be cheap, and it will connect a bunch of people to the airport line (and people in the centre to Ocean Terminal).

The tram's already there at the top end - just needs a set of points putting in and away we go.

Fans of the Innocent should be very glad that a housing estate was built at the top of the tunnel, because I really can't see how they'd get the tram out to Musselburgh that way now (but still - if it proves to be a big hit, that would be another quick and cheap way to extend its reach. 2050 anyone?)

I stopped to speak to a couple of fluro workers there last week to enquire as to why it will take 9 months to build a tiddly little bridge. I have worked on much larger sites and bridges of that nature have been donein under 3!!. In a nutshell the council fluro blamed the engineer who in turn blamned the contractor who in turn blamed the council chap. So no wonder the mess isn't progressing.
Back to the subject up the end of the cycle track. Apparently according to the council chap the current (old) ramp doesn't meet modern DDA standards It's deemed to steep for wheelchair users and disabled people. Instead of having a zig zag ramp there is going to be a very gradual slope built up heading north from the new bridge to the roseburn corridor.
The council chap then said that it will get built at the side to make way for the tram line which WILL go down there in the future!!!! Personally I don't see any future funding being given to these people.
I asked said council chap about the badgers there. His response was "we have done a survey and there are no badgers" Clearly he just went for a fag and didn't see any ergo survey completed.

"Anyone know what the Russell Road end of the Roseburn path will look like once the works are complete?"

Good question. 'Previously' the plan was for steps as 'not enough room for a ramp'. Understandably there were objections. But don't know if tie/CEC paid any attention!

Ask your councillors...

"possibility of a new access to the west side of the path at Murrayfield station"

Well it's already possible - though a bit overgrown.

Turn sharp left before bridge (heading east after coming from Russell Road) into former goods yard - slightly steep but perhaps preferable to the blind entrance off Wester Coates.

Try it, take a machete.

Anyone know what the Russell Road end of the Roseburn path will look like once the works are complete? Is the access to Russell Road itself going to be reinstated, or will we forever need to access RR via Roseburn Terrace / Street?
