Good words for Pedal Forth from me, for getting a crankarm off in late November after I somehow managed to partially strip the threads when I was dealing with a creaky BB.

Dealt with it straight away & had a good chat with him whilst he worked.

Extra bonus in that it's a couple of minutes' walk from my flat, so I'll definitely be using them again for any work I might <strike>mess-up</strike> not manage myself ;-)

Chap at The Bike Works spent ages trying to fix the hub gear on my Brompton a while ago (I think he was quite irritated that he couldn't get it to work) before finally admitting defeat and fitting a new one. I wasn't charged for the time he spent trying to fix the old hub, just for the fit of the new one.

Old thread but worth a further comment - my freewheel was on its way out and gave up the ghost this week (while going uphill at Ashley terrace, interesting experience).

Bought a new one in TBW, got home and discovered I didnt have the right removal tool.

Popped in today, they removed it and fitted the new one for me while I waited.........and didnt want to charge me ! (I popped some money in the tips box).

I could have got the new freewheel cheaper on the interweb, but what price do you put on that level of service?

Brilliant stuff yet again.

(other LBS are available, but not two minutes from home)

For balance, I always find the guys in TBW good as well, although I cant comment on their abilities at bike related sports / traffic light gymnastics......

Hannah, I think Laidback has identified her as.

Same LBS "lent" me a crank for free off their "unwanted bits" shelf when fall on ice of friend's bike bent it so that it was fouling on the chainstay. To make it fit properly he took it downstairs and happily angle grinded it (seemed very excited for excuse to use the grinder) down to size. Refused to accept any money for crank or grinding, and refused to take the old crank back when replacement arrived!

I know we all occasionally moan about dodgy drivers, rubbish roads etc - so tonight a positive post.

clicky clicky went my chain as I huffed up Ashley terrace - quick look when I get home and its had its chips (suspected this for a few days).

Freewheel down to Bicycle Works, fully expecting to lose it for a day or two, but the girl mechanic (not sure her name) did it on the spot - new SS chain, fitted adjusted etc - £14

Brilliant service, incredibly cheap - and on way home within 5 mins of walking in.

p.s. I have singled out TBW but this is really a thread about all good LBS - as opposed to the rather indifferent experience I imagine Halfords would bring.

Use them or lose them....
