I found the CTC magazine from November last year which has three recommended commuter bikes:

The Islabikes Beinn 29 is their recommendation with the Trek Soho and Cannondale Badboy also worth considering.

These choices were based on cost. A reader survey suggested that people were prepared to spend an average of £589 on a commuter (also referred to interchangeably in the article as a hybrid/utility).

*other brands of reputable tourer are of course available...

"what a waste of newsprint"

Because too often the national newspapers only nods to cycling are such utterly pointless and subjective "top 10" lists of "ooh! these looks nice" that aren't very far removed from an advertisment. They ignore the real isses and pay lip service in this manner.

I nearly bought a 2nd hand Giant Halfway from C**h C**verters in Dunfermline. Alas I was pipped to the post by another buyer. Nice design, though if you buckle a wheel you have a problem.....also the rear rack is a bit odd.

On balance the Tchibo Alubike folder is fine for my commute: hub dynamo lights, hub gear/brake, takes fully laden panniers no bother at all. They still sell them in Germany, for just a bit less than a Dahon Speed 7.

Singular Peregrine is lovely though from a commuting pov you'd be as well with the Kaff, it doesn't really do anything extra for the £300 mark up. It is much prettier though.
