The only witnesses were others in the car but the Police investigated, found the car's keeper was known to them, and interviewed them. Although there wasn't anyone else to witness the attempted assault(?), the Police were able to get one of the passengers a Fixed Penalty Notice for littering! So it can be worth reporting even relatively trivial incidents.</p> <p>Much longer ago a van driver deliberately ran into the back of my bike twice while I was cycling in Princes St.. There was an independent witness, and I gave the Police the number plate (not just the number, the actual plate - half had fallen off and I pulled the other half off the van) but he had driven off after I moved out of his way (there was a big queue of buses behind him by then) and the Police later said they couldn't trace him. Thankfully there are witnesses around and people decent enough to step in and ask WTF is going on and with the calm head to write down the number plate of the offender.</p> <p>As for the Police receptionist? My limited experience of them was quite similar - "so you're saying you were &lt;i&gt;almost&lt;/i&gt; knocked off your bike, but there wasn't actually an accident? So what exactly are you trying to report?"</p> <p>I know it's not nice - but the fact there's actually been contact between the van and the cyclist should help her case.
