I was just reading that this evening. I'm tempted to agree after my weekend in Paris. Getting the ordinary punter on a Euro-style bike will have a number of effects:
a) more cyclists on the road, drivers get used to it;
b) drivers are more likely to either know people who cycle or to cycle themselves, so empathise or understand how a cyclist wants motorists to behave;
c) upright bikes look less "aggressive" than race bikes, so don't get drivers' backs up so much;
d) upright bikes look more relaxed and maybe more vulnerable so drivers take more care;
e) cycling becomes normal.

Edinburgh certainly seems to have a lot more bikes now than it did a few years ago, but there's plenty distance to go yet.

Interesting idea.

"Sydney will never be a bicycle-friendly city until it develops a ''second cycling culture'' which encourages relaxed European-style riding without the compulsory use of helmets, experts have warned."

http://www.copenhagenize.com/2010/03/sit-up-straight-sydney.html

Edinburgh too?
