SRD + anth, the same road conditions and driving habits are present in the west of the city too. So much sheer impatience of drivers! Yesterday an oncomming driver played chicken with me as I cycled along a road with wall-to-wall parked cars to my right, and I had to be the chicken. On Monday I had to emergency stop on my spiky tyred mtb, which might've turned out differently had I been on my usual slick tyres.

Car drivers seem to have forgotten that in proto-frosty conditions cyclists can't just stand on the brakes or careen around corners.

Today I was following a late-middle aged driver who was seemingly nervous about overtaking a slightly slower cyclist ahead of me, then they braked for no apparent reason: no side roads, no indicators, no peculiar behaviour from the cyclist who I was watching through the windows of the car. The driver sped up again, then braked almost to a stop, then decided to pull over without indicating. Being telepathic I had already slowed in kind and moved right of primary to leave enough manoeuvering room to overtake.

And just for balance, earlier I caught up a ninja cyclist who had light-absorbing clothes and no lights. As we met the long queue to the traffic lights he took to the pavement, then rounded the corner and disappeared, while I was stuck waiting for the green which I missed because the queue was so long and with no room to filter.

Everybody was fine this morning, not that they had much chance to be otherwise, boxed in front and rear.

I did see a motorcyclist trying to go up the inside of a tipper truck (in the cycle lane!) just before the Dick Vet, and actually have to lean left and punt with his foot as it pulled away. J'amuse..

Agree wholeheartedly SRD - something about the weather perhaps, or maybe just that the roads were busier which had all the drivers riled up.

Half a mile out my front door I was passed quickly and closely by a BMW X1 that just had to get in front before a junction ahead. Couple of hundred yards on I sailed past in the bus lane. Didn't see him (for was a chap) again till the Royal Mile (more room given this time, but still in that 'must get past' frame of mind). I pulled alongside at the Bridges crossroads as he was indicating right at the red light.

That's a few times now I've seen very very clearly on my route that I'm just as fast (if not faster) on the bike than in the car...

Absolutely rammed in town today, although I was running 5-10 mins late.

The vehicles that passed me around KB / south suburban I had already re-passed by the junction with the grange (including a motorbike!), then it was almost stationary to the Dick vet, truly stationary from the other side of the junction up to George Sq.

I cut across at Nick Square but even there the traffic was heavy, I cut past dozens and dozens of cars down to Princes St, quite a lot queueing around Picardy, and another load waiting at Canonmills.

Such fun - if I knew it was like that every day, I'd change my working hours back by 15 minutes!

'more cars than recently on the route'

and as always worse driving than usual. One young woman tried to pull a three point turn on Gilmore place, in front of me and another cyclist, made worse by fact that I was dead centre of road as about to turn. Another car with young male* driver came around corner from Harden place at speed, and on my side of the road, as I was about to turn onto Harden place. Both of them looked very surprised to see me.... a few other, less extreme incidents too

*original post said female, but meant to say male.

Walking home from the pub last night I almost went over a couple of times (due to ice, not alcohol!) and was expecting this morning to find ice patches under the water - I took it very gingerly, but seems the temperatures rose enough to render my concerns unwarranted.

There were, however, more cars than recently on the route!

It's 3 degC up here and the road looks wet rather than icy, and 2.8 degC according to the KB weather station.

If the temperature plummets later on though it could be exciting.

Can only comment on the Gyle paths, but they're iceless. Yesterday they were pretty heavily iced.

Freezing rain warning for Scotland

A severe weather warning has been issued for much of Scotland as a band of freezing rain passes over the country later.

The Met Office said an area of rain would move south-eastwards across Scotland, affecting most areas apart from the far north and west.

Forecasters are predicting the rain will freeze instantly as it hits very cold surfaces in some places.

The resulting ice could make pavements and roads "extremely hazardous".
