This morning was a cracking commute. Had a chap on the Innocent, who has started always waving and saying hello, comment on my 'nice fixed', and minutes later saw Min coming the other way, with us both realising in time to stop and have a chat (and gave me an excuse to tighten up the drive side crank which I clearly hadn't tightened enough when replacing the BB).

Plus no-one tried to kill me with a car till I was almost at work and the Hobs driver was very very obviously looking straight past me and into the sun so hadn't seen me, and I was able to take pre-emptive avoidance.

Yeah they do that.

I assume it could see 'me' - as something large and moving, but it wouldn't be able to hear me above the noise of the WoL, so wouldn't be spooked by that. Long zooms are useful!

Herons are dead cool. I sometimes see them perched in trees which looks weird.

I was on the Roseburn early yesterday morning and it was filled with blackbirds who went zooooom across the path and were very cute. Except for the one that tried to zooooom under my front wheel. Luckily he saw me and took flight instead.

Freshwater fish are the main part of the Kingfisher's diet, but they will also take aquatic insects and more rarely crustaceans, molluscs and small amphibians.

Hope my linking works better this time. The wind was "fun". The long struggle in from QM Uni was compensated for by the whizzing east from Dalkeith.

I've seen them on the Water of Leith at Roseburn and Craighlockhart Dell (not recently). They have been seen on the Burdiehouse Burn and Union Canal too.

You swine! I get frogs and you get a kingfisher!

I've wanted to see one since I was a kid and it was on the cover of the 1st issue of a wildlife partwork thing. Every single walk along the Water of Leith I'm keeping an eye out for a blue streak.

Now, I live in Duddingston, which really isn't that far from the Jewel, so whereabout was it you saw the mythical beast? (link above doesn't seem to be working?)

p.s. that's a bit of a looping route, but you're right, when the weather is good there's nothing better!

Feeling great after my commute today. I am back to coming along NCN route 1 on my way in. This is much more relaxing. I come into KB from Eskbank - the alternative when it is icy is via Gilmerton Road - far less pleasant (and hilly).

With the sun up before I start now and the wonderful spring wildlife, it was gorgeous even when I was almost pushed backwards by the rather invigorating wind. To cap it all I saw a kingfisher near The Jewel - see this link.
