My "best" helmet is a Specialized S-Works - I use this on long rides on the road bike. It's light, really well vented and fits my head much better than my previous one, a Giro Pneumo. Fit is always going to depend on how your head shape interfaces with the manufacturer's expected head shape though...

I've also got another helmet (for night rides and round town rides when I decide to wear one or where Ms S instructs me to wear one) which is a Met (possibly a Crossover). It's got a light in the tightening mechanism dial, which is a nice feature. Fit's not as good as the Spesh, and it has quite a short chin strap on it for some reason. Does its job though.

The Giro Pneumo got binned on account of damage. It had some cracks in the glaze from having been crushed while air-transported in a bike bag, but I figured they wouldn't impact it structurally. However, the rear right dents and cracking in the polystyrene occasioned by my pothole-induced sideways dismount at 20mph were certainly structural, so it got slung...

I've got a Giro. Not sure of the model. Comfy enough and quite well ventilateed. Can fit a thin thermal balaclave underneath when weather is chilly.

It does get stinky but all the pads can be removed and refitted so I stick them in a wee net washbag every few weeks and put them through the washing machine.

I have a Giro Atmos. Done a 800+ mile tour and day to day for about 2 years as well. It's what Lance "mcCheater" Armstrong wears and it's actually pretty comfortable.

I replaced the front pads with some wee bits the other day and suddenly it became much more comfortable again!

I have a giro, old and battered and a newer specialised in extra large as I am with Richard midnite hat size Snyder from capt. Beefheart band size 8 Heid. The capt. Said he lied about his hat size though.

As with many things in life there appears to be a spectrum. From those riding without a helmet through to those who replace their helmets when they get a little bash.

Congratulations to those agin them for not pointing out the somewhat irrational reasoning that allows "us" to wear them as a precaution or fashion item but to not replace them when they get beaten up. We are all only as interesting as our contradictions.

Or skip to the end - apparently there are differing standards, so if you want a helmet, you might as well get one to the strictest standards (Snell B-95, which exceeds the UK standards).

Downside is that these aren't easily available here...

At the minute I like the lack of ventilation, but am likely to change my mind come summer, but I definitely like the look of the shell helmets more than the roadie ones.

I'm considering replacing our boys helmets. They have these currently but they are starting to complain that they are a tight fit, despite there being ample room at the rear. I guess its a width restriction.

I tried my new small Metz Xilo on number one son recently which fits him well so I think I'll upgrade number one son and see how my hemlet fits number two son also.

Currently I have a Specialized Echelon, in black with stealth black reflective everywhere. It replaced a Specialized M1 which itself replaced a Giro Ventoux. I did have the foresight to order a complete spare set of fleece pads for the Echelon when I bought it, as I found, with my M1, that they totally disintegrated when washed a few times.

When it isn't polystyrene time, I use a Buff.

I had a Specialized Align, just replaced because - (1) it was smelling awful ! and (2) the nice guy in Velo Ecosse let me have the new Bell one for £10 as it was all the cash I had on me - bargain !

Spent first few rides this year helmetless - and really enjoyed it.

I only use one as I leave for work approx 6.15, and want somewhere high up to attach knogs at this time of year.

Giro Indicator at the moment. Previously a Bell Somethingorother. The wee front pad things started to smell last year and fell apart when washed, so have been replaced with one of the strips of fleece we used to use to line the wingpiglet's nappies. One of the front vents is in just the right place for mounting a Revolution silicone USB blinky but the Cherry Bomb can only be persuaded to fit at the back with zip ties; I didn't fancy clipping it to the rear tension band in case it was driven into my cerebellum by the wing mirror of a passing bus.

@DaveC that must look nice and "jaunty"
@Anth - they say it gets brittle I think - probably a lot to do with cycing out in the cold then going in to the heat and the sunshine (hah) baking the plastic and making it expand faster than the polystyrene.
Oh they also say you should replace it if you even so much as drop it from waist height... Sounds like someone wanting to make money to me...

Always liked Giro helmets. No real reason, but the two that I've had were both Giro. Current one is a good few years old - I remember reading somewhere that they should be replaced as they lose (debated) effectiveness over time, anyone know if this is the case or not?

I only use it to go mountain biking, or if on an event that mandates the use, seems a bit of a waste to throw out what seems to be a perfectly serviceable item. Does the polystyrene 'decompose'?

My last helmet is a Specialized thing which was too big and didn't have a dial tightener but instead had a push thing. It was far too big and I didn't notice until I tried putting on a helmet light which meant the helmet flops over left and right.

I went with Revolution's finest cheap and nasty £25 option when I won a voucher in their "why do you ride?" compo last year and got printed in their mag.
Front pad has worn out but the rear ones were irrelvant anyway given the nice adjusty platic strap is positioned close to them and they don't actually cushion me heid much so I moved one forward.
The clip is one of the new fangled slidey ratchet kind and the spring in the button went on one side (well more the clip keeping it in the housing but as I had lost the receipt they wouldn't replace it)
I find it's useful for attaching some extra lights to the front and back for extra height visibility above parked cars especially. I found attaching these to my bald bonce was somewhat painful, glue hurt and duct tape looked stupid.

quite large in design (i have a big napper!)
though could be a bit creaky someties
also the front pad wore out fast

replaced it today with a Fox Flux helmet in white/grey
seems nice
neater fit than the Boardman
has a matt type finish to the shell, which i quite like
also the inner edge of the helmet is covered by shell, rather than open polystyrene
