I sometimes wonder who my fellow cyclists are, as they seem to believe in a lot of nonsense. I suppose that also applies to my fellow drivers though!

Having just read several articles on #cyclesafe before completing the survey might have had some effect on the reponses given.

Yes indeed, it is stupid really. We are already paying for "road safety" for motorists. But this is 40% of Times reading cyclists don't forget. They probably think special taxes are the answer to everything.

cyclists should pay a tax

I pay VAT, council tax, PAYE income tax, alcohol duty. Which other tax would they like me to pay? Perhaps I should take up smoking and pay tobacco tax? Or maybe buy a Range Rover and leved it parked outside and pay some VED?

It bothers me that money seems to be seen as a great stumbling block. Yes, money is required and ideally, lots more. However in the grand scheme of transport budgets and government financial mismanagement it is rounding errors. Roads and road-safety and public transport are financed out of general taxation. What is being asked for is a fairer allocation of that pot, rather than the status quo of the lion's share going to roads (for cars) and grand projets.

"One surprising result is that 4 out of 10 cyclists believe they should pay their own form of tax to finance any schemes to improve cycling safety, rather than the cost being met from general taxation.

About 44 per cent of drivers say that improvements to cycling safety should be paid for out of general taxes.

The public as a whole divides fairly evenly: 49 in favour of money for improvements coming from general taxation, 51 per cent saying that cyclists should pay a tax. "
