which would create panic and carnage if fired off in spaces rich with hard steel stone and concrete surfaces

In a World Heritage Site? Think of the reputation to the city!

One of the best things about Waverley is the amount of bike parking available.

A dreadful pile of hyped up stuff, but worth noting that the taxi rank at Glasgow Central is barely 12 taxis worth, and they have a holding area to feed in cabs. A dynamic road system with a rapidly turning over pool of cabs - ie no waiting stack taking up space, would be sensible, and cabs from distributed ranks around the station should aid dispersal, whilst having all vehicles that do enter the station area clearly moving through on a stop and quickly move on basis.

However the 'ban' style of management highlights the failure to deliver an effective management regime for this issue. Responses to the Scotsman piece highlight this, much in the same way that so many other security measures are poorly delivered - good policing is invisible - not pseudo soldier police strutting about with SA weapons which would create panic and carnage if fired off in spaces rich with hard steel stone and concrete surfaces to riccochet around from.

Once motor/disabled vehicles can only get in via secure entry system, how will bicycles get in? Have they given any thought to this I wonder or are we in for another Haymarket style 'oversight'?

FWIW I do think taxis and cars should be banned from the station to improve the overall usage and 'experience' of the station by passengers, but let's not use terrorism as an excuse.

As indeed does Perth station. But then, everyone knows that with the Festival, Castle, and the Parly Edinburgh's a prime terror target for.....er, well we may not know who exactly, but it's a target in the way that all those non-Festival, non-Castle, and non-Parly places aren't.

There, now can we get on with building more retail outlets in the station with all that extra space, er, I mean improving security measures?

Since the taxis are continually moving through and well clear of the ,ain circulation area the risk is very low - it would move to Waverley Bridge and Princes Street, with a ban and the other hazards on the road would increase. What would make Waverly work though is a through cab road from New Street and out onto Waverley Bridge, and no stopping traffic - just setting down/picking up and move on.

Waverley ban on taxis ‘is an overreaction’

Published on Wednesday 7 March 2012 12:07

A PROPOSED security-inspired ban on cars and taxis at Waverley station has been described as an overreaction by the SNP’s Edinburgh Southern MSP, Jim Eadie.

That article flips between using 'guidelines' and 'legislation' for the excuse

Fastidious, jobsworth organisations like to try and pull this one to justify their unpopular decisions. This is guidelines, not legislation. Nobody has created a law that says you cannot have vehicle access into mainline railway stations because of the olmpics. There are however guidelines that recommends this. Guidelines should be applied on a by-risk basis. There is not a statutory obligation to comply with them.

But at the end of the day, Network Rail own and operate the station and it's up to them who can and can not drive into it.

Needles to say, this won't apply to their own white vans or contractors.

"The Evening News revealed last week how the station would be closed to cars and taxis permanently by July in response to terror threats ahead of the London Olympics."

Perceived, or actual, one wonders?

Or complete ban on vehicles entering Waverley - that barrier wouldn't stop anything driven at it.

This is a little more concerning. Are they planning to ban all vehicles, including bicycles? And motorbike parking in Waverley is currently next to nonexistent, and the rack on Waverley Bridge gets very full.

So. We've established that taxis, cars, people, trains, glass, bricks and North Bridge should all be banned from Waverley Station.

I've never heard of a bomber blowing up water randomly, I propose we flood the station with water. May I also propose that 'Waverley' is a rubbish name, and the more apt North Loch be used? Actually, that's a bit wordy, how about Norloch?

"They could put a bomb on a train... "

Then if we divert all trains around the south sub that will keep the station safe.

I was in the main Waverley concourse, years ago, when someone lobbed a brick off North Bridge. Much raining down of shattered glass.

So also need to ban bricks and glass.

They could drop the bomb from North Bridge. We should ban North bridge.

What about suicide bombers with bombs strapped to their person?!?! Surely we should be banning people from the station?!?!? Will nobody think of the children! etc etc etc

"Another small victory for terrorism."

Quite

London bombing - people with rucksacks

Glasgow Airport attempt - large car.

Presume rucksacks won't be routinely searched???

Or complete ban on vehicles entering Waverley - that barrier wouldn't stop anything driven at it.

Preston?

I think the taxis are safer and less of a nuisance inside the station than they are lurking on Waverley bridge or Market Street, mixing it up with the tour buses and airlink bus.
