Chdot,

The 80:40:20 project (now named A better way to work) only started in February, so the website will be with us in a week or two.

I understand where the confusion is with the Bike Station website, and will speak to Mark to get that sorted out. There is no absolutely no cost to employers for taking part in A better way to work.

We hope by getting as many employers in Edinburgh involved as possible, that we CAN make a difference, and encourage more people to choose cycling for their commute to work. That's where we rely on people like City Cycling Edinburgh forum users to spread the word to anyone they think might be interested in taking part.

If you want more information on A better way to work please feel free to e-mail me on wendy@thebikestation.org.uk or call 0131 6628570.

Can't help there, you need to address your concerns to Mark Sydenham, he is the one in charge, I am just a peripatetic trainer.

"It will be interesting to see if in a years time that it is cycling still completely off their radar. Will the Bike Station on the 80:40:20 project make a difference?"

It will be interesting to see. I'm slightly surprised that the project's web site http://www.findabetterwaytowork.org is "currently under construction at the moment".

When you click through to http://www.thebikestation.org.uk/employers there is an outline of the project with "Best of all its FREE! Your boss won't need to pay a thing".

Then there's list of useful things the BS offers - with prices. Bit confusing.

@Arellcat "So why, if their commute is such that those are the options, is cycling still completely off their radar? " It will be interesting to see if in a years time that it is cycling still completely off their radar. Will the Bike Station on the 80:40:20 project make a difference?

There are ways around meter feeding rules, you simply have to show that you have moved your vehicle.

On street parking isn't really much use for a typical 9-5 commuter because you can't park all day. Feeding the meter isn't allowed so you'd have to move zones.

And I'm baffled by the idea that a higher fine for parking offences would mean that someone couldn't use their car for work anymore. That would suggest that they budget on paying x number of fines per year.

Also amusing/sad that none of them seem to think that using the council car parks is a solution (much less park and ride). No. it has to be on-road parking or nothing. Bah!

"So why, if their commute is such that those are the options, is cycling still completely off their radar?"

Because such people are still in the mindset that personal transport = car - and public transport is a real comedown.

However Edinburgh (and London) are unusual in the UK where PT has reasonably wide acceptance as being 'not too demeaning'.

BUT that doesn't answer your question.

It seems 'obvious' that people 'having' to give up cars ought to consider 2 wheeled personal transport. So clearly there are 'barriers'.

33 comments at the time of writing and...shhh, nothing about bicycles!

But look at comment 29:

"...people I know [are] complaining bitterly that because of this they will have USE THE BUS OR WALK TO WORK..."

So why, if their commute is such that those are the options, is cycling still completely off their radar?
