We go to Sainsbury's as it's the closest store. I used to use Scotmid when I lived in Marchmont, and the Argyle Place veg shops, but the driving of the veg shop vans is so bad that I decided to cut down on supporting them.

ASDA never bothered (they're not interested if it isn't the size of a warehouse) and Morrison's gave up the effort to fight it out in the small high-street supermarkets, leaving Sainsbury's playing catch-up to all the Tesco Express / Metros that went in 4 or so years ago. Co-op also been on the march buying up Somerfield - there's at least 2 or 3 non-Scotmid Co-ops in Edinburgh that used to be Somerfield. My mum rates their cheese selection.

There used to be a tiny Scotmid in Bruntsfield but it changed to an independent corner shop.

I avoid Sainsburys as I don't like their horrible orange/maroon colour scheme. Or their prices. Or their selection. Or Jamie Oliver's face gurning out at me from their products.

As a student though we used to go from time to time, when we weren't heading in to the Scotmid down below Velo Ecosse.

I predict it will be epically popular, and if another nearby venue was available, we'd soon see an Asda or similar setting up opposite (and turning over plenty).

If people aren't interested in a shop it will shut - even a Sainsbury's. Of course, it won't in reality... Could we not then argue that the fight to stop them opening is simply a minority opposing the desires of everyone else?

"SAINSbury’s looks set to clear another hurdle in its quest to open a controversial new store in Bruntsfield.

Planning officers have given the green light to the supermarket giant’s application to display adverts at the former Peckham’s delicatessen despite 38 letters of objection.

Local traders have pledged to drive shoppers away until the retail chain shuts the new store. "

I wonder how the local traders will do that. With pitchforks?

The first ever peckhams opened in late 1980s I think in Hyndland in Glasgow. I believe they were a major shareholder in Rangers. That is of course a lie. I heard that the original owners have a child who had to go to Great Ormond St Hospital and they were down there a great deal thus not able to give the business enough attention. I cannot confirm the veracity of this remark, but it does explain how a thriving business of long standing can go bust. how rangers can go bust is another matter.

Peckhams went bust.

Stockbridge shop is now Henri's of Morningside branch.
Bruntsfield is turning into a Sainsbury's "local" store (I assume other Sainsbury's stores aren't local to anywhere). Local NIMBYs out in force.
Newington one is being retained as a Peckham's.

True! Last time I was there we ended up sitting outside. My friend was fine because he had all his motorbike clothing on but I'd arrived on foot and was freeeeezing. Mind you, one normally goes to Falko for the cake, not the coffee.

What's happening to the Newington version? Maybe it'll turn into something whose windows people don't feel compelled to smash.

Ok, so they're actually talking about Morningside and Bruntsfield.

In my head I walked from Holy Corner to Morningside Station and got to around 27ish, but that was counting Indian restaurants and pubs.

But, this bit:

"It comes as another multi-national, Sainsbury’s, finds itself fighting off protests in Bruntsfield over its move into the former Peckham’s deli store"

Given all of our recent discussions on coffee and tea and so on, interesting to see an article in the EEN today decrying the massive number of coffeeshops in Morningside. 57 in the space of a mile, wails the paper.

Or rather. 57 places in the space of a mile in which you could buy a coffee. Still seems an awful lot, but that will include pubs, probably the Dominion cinema, does the Waitrose have a wee cafe bit?

I'd rather folk were honest and say that it's the fact the shop is a 'Costa' that they have a problem with. That I could rally behind.
