Public to name new Forth crossing

The public will be allowed to vote for the name of the new Forth crossing, the Scottish government decides.

"Disruption for drivers as Forth Road Bridge undergoes work"

http://www.scotsman.com/edinburgh-evening-news/transport/disruption_for_drivers_as_forth_road_bridge_undergoes_work_1_2144484

(Though not until September)

It's going to cost £440,000. Is that expensive? Anything to compare it with??...

"

CERT. I vaguely remember this as a teenager. One of David Begg's schemes wasn't it? A guided busway between Airport and the city? Sound familiar?

"

Yes and no. I think if it was his idea he'd have made sure it happened. CEC scrapped it and only built the short (and short-lived) guided busway which 'conveniently' built bridges that the tram is planned to use.

Not enough money to make bridges wide enough for a proper cycle route of course...

Various bits were bought and businesses re-located (and also the Balgreen allotments).

I think CERT buses were going to use the Western Approach Road so the tram isnt using some of the land that was CPOed.

Some CERT officials went to work for tie.

"@bax - great map, not one I've seen "

Ditto. Some great details.

until the idea of CERT

CERT. I vaguley remember this as a teenager. One of David Begg's schemes wasn't it? A guided busway between Airport and the city? Sound familiar?

I believe they went as far as compulsory purchase and relocating of some buildings at Westfield alongside the Water of Leith to make way for it (where Wolfson are). And then it quietly died a death to be replaced by the ELECTROCERTONRAILS

@bax - great map, not one I've seen (although familiar with most of the details, and the smaller Railways Clearing House junction diagrams based on it) and captures an interesting point in local railway history where Waverley Station is still know by its old name of General Station and Corstorphine Station is at balgreen, the branch to Corstorphine proper not yet being built.

"Have you ever looked at the Abercrombie Report?"

Flicked through it a few weeks ago - my Grandad has a copy. Very interesting and lots to it. I liked the artist's impression of the new look Princess St gardens with Waverley turfed over, two tier Princes St and some swizzy new roads.

It will be out of copyright soon.

"Is that why the land alongside the railway, now partly built on by trams - was never built on between Hermiston Gait and Stenhouse?"

It was certainly 'reserved' for transport - ie roads until the idea of CERT came along.

Since at least 1948!

@splitshift I like that idea. Actually, there was something similar in the news a few weeks back, Network Rail talking of putting a viewing platform onto the Bridge that you could pay to walk out to.

@chdot In the 80s the Conservative administration (Lothian Region) was determined to build the whole Western Approach Road - effectively bringing the M8 into Lothian Road.

during the 1970s, i think, the BL plant at bathgate, (think proclaimers song here !)was exporting lorries via grangemouth docks, a huge road building project was put into place, to allow these vehicles, and other main route north and south runs to avoid villages such as maddiston down to polmont and thereafter to grangemouth. This project involved the building of a bridge over a well known hazrd, the Avon gorge, roads were built, dual carraigways in place, round abouts etc, the the Leyland plant closed! work all stopped and the only part not in place ? the bridge over the gorge !44 tonnes, in the rain , in my lorry , most will avoid like the plauge ! actually easier to travel to edin, along the m9, then m8 to livingston! We might run out if oil, then the new forth crossing would be ..........a tourist attraction ? if any could get there! or, a cycle only crossing !!!with a cake shop half way across, to look down on the defunct hound point terminal, so we can tell our grandchildren about the great oil boom !
then again , perhaps not !All day , logging trail leader rides today !

Too late.

The contracts are signed.

Bit like the tram.

BUT -

In the 80s the Conservative administration (Lothian Region) was determined to build the whole Western Approach Road - effectively bringing the M8 into Lothian Road.

So they signed contracts just before an election.

Labour got in and cancelled it. Ratepayers were paying compensation costs for several years.

No SP election for three years. I doubt if it will get much mention in the coming CEC election.

"

THE threat to the Forth road bridge from corrosion is receding, new checks on its main cables are expected to show. The news would further postpone potential curbs on traffic – but also call into question the need for a new bridge costing as much as £1.6 billion.
